But that's easier over there as there are a lot more campsites in a smaller area, in some case.

Agreed -- we do need more but it would certainly help touring if UK sites moved away from the "book and pay up front" system to the "pay when you leave " as in France.

I agree with this. If they admitted they should never have taken the booking in the first place surely they should refund you in full.

I can understand a campsite taking a non-returnable deposit but there is no way I would pay the full amount up front weeks in advance...anything could happen...World War 3 might break out!!

I once lost a deposit because the weather changed for the worse at the last minute and I think twice about even paying a deposit now unless it's within a couple of days of going and the weather looks good.

always pay for items with a credit card as it affords you some protection then you can pay the card bill the next day if you wish. always

I agree with you all about no booking and just turn up, this was how it used to be when I was young.
There’s still a few sites where you just arrive.

That was how it was when I started camping just over 20 years ago and we never had a problem. The Anglesey site I go to regularly specifically has a 'no booking' policy, you just turn up and pay for the nights you want when you get there.

The majority of independent sites that we go to up here do just that. We rarely book, and only for one night. The risk is that you turn up to the site you really really want to stay at (local event, visiting friends, end of a long day's drive etc) & the sign at the gate says "site full". (Happened at a C&CC site. Looked like the hard stands were all taken, and the grass pitches were too soft to use after recent rain.)

Many years ago I just pointed the car in the direction I wanted to go and picked a campsite when I got there. Rarely had any problems getting a pitch. However, over the last 5-10 years or so, camping has become more and more popular (perhaps the recession had something to do with it) and I wouldn't now risk a trip, especially a weekend, without booking first.

That said, one of my favourite sites is non-bookable and you just turn up, but since I camp midweek and not usually during school holidays I have had no problems so far.

I did recently notice though, when I stayed for a Wednesday and Thursday night, that quite a few people were turning up late on the Thursday evening no doubt to secure a pitch for a long weekend. Campsites are far more busy at weekends now than I recall years ago.
