I once had to climb out of an Oban hotel lounge window to catch the early ferry (0715?) to Coll (that goes on to Tiree) as the owners weren't up & the front door was locked.
Yes, I'd paid up the night before.
Useful to know about the car parks though, in an emergency: thanks for that.
I'm sorry, FionaW, had to laugh at that vision!!! Hopefully either the owners moved on or got wiser.
Mind that there's a huge row going on in Oban since they introduced more parking charges and the overnight bit is only at Council car parks in Oban.
A major row is about to take place on Mull - parking charges expanding at Craignure (no answer to islanders' query about what happens if the ferry can't run back due to bad weather or a technical issue!!) and Tobermory.

So just to update this post...
.. We had a fabulous trip and made the eye-wateringly early ferry arriving with a full day ahead in Tiree. Although we have visited lots of the Scottish islands I truly fell in love with Tiree and will definitely go back. All the beaches were just so accessible with easy parking.
We stayed at the croft campsite at Balephetrish House which was ideal for our needs as we were practically on the beach. The beach was a small sandy bay and my toddler just loved splashing about in the rock pools. One note of caution, this croft site has just a dead end grassy track to park up on, which isn't really suitable for larger motorhomes.
I did try to check out the other croft camp locations whilst we were there and all that I saw were either right by, or just over the road from a beach.
Overall a fantastic place, and we can't wait to visit again!
Hi to anyone who's available. I'm planning to visit Tiree next week with a motorhome and use croft camping. I believe you have to book in advance but I can't find any contact information about crofts which allow motorhome camping. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help. I thought perhaps I would phone the Tiree ranger service but there may be a better way.
Info via link above, readily found on Google. You also need to book ferry - go to www.calmac.co.uk. At present, technical issues on one of the ferries is causing some different timetables so this is essential. Tiree only has one ferry port, unlike Mull, so be aware, even under normal circumstances, you may not get the sailings you want - you cannot just expect to turn up and be accommodated.

Thanks so much for that info. I'd tried various combinations without success. Also thanks for info re ferry. I'm awaiting the up to date calmac brochure
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
ike13, looks like the technical issue is resolved (for the moment!!). If you want to go next week, get your pitch booked NOW. Calmac - don't wait for brochure! Go to the Calmac website to check ferry timetables and book online. If you look up the Oban-Coll-Tiree timetable, there's a link through to the booking system at the bottom.
Sorry to sound like a nag, but ferries get very busy and the sooner you book, the more likely you'll get one you want.

When on the go with dodgy signals hard copy is useful to have. It arrived the following day so very pleased with their service. Thanks for your advice. Is Tiree popular with families?
Do you mean popular with families because you have a family & need to know there will be lots to do? It’s relative. It’s not popular like Benidorm, no. If you usually do things together rather than activities being laid on for you, it’s wonderful. What’s not to like about quiet roads & your choice of deserted beach? But be ready with indoor entertainment in case bad weather keeps you in the van.
PS - the CalMac app is still worth loading up because it’ll say if your ferry has been cancelled by gales. Or give changes to the timetable due to local events.
Thanks Fiona. Being in our late 60s our entertainment needs on a rainy day are few! Sudoku, a crossword and a book are all we need. Good advice 're the app
