Birder99 & Monty15, you are both right of course, but Birder99, neither of the sites in that area that I mentioned are small CS/CLs, they are both full size sites. They both have hard standings, and they are both accessed from tarmac roads of reasonable width. I'd have no difficulty getting a 53 seater coach into either of them.

The other side to the equation is if you have spent £100,000 plus on a large motorhome are you going to risk getting stuck trying to access or egress from a small CL/CS. As above, if there is a demand someone will supply it and if there is no demand they will employ salespersons to convince you that you need it.

and the other side of that point of view would be, if I had spent that amount of money would I risk taking to a site that was hemmed in and surrounded by hoards of kids running about and on their bikes?

I know which I prefer, CL or CS, but do my research as OH hates single track roads and poor access, there are plenty of such sites with good access, you only need to check. £65 per night, no thanks, but we have used full facility sites in France in ACSI season.

If I could afford, or wanted to spend £65 a night I would stay in a hotel and get waited on. I'd be reluctant to spend even a third of that amount on somewhere to put my caravan.

Sorry, I apologise, I was stirring things up a bit and trying to get a reaction that nobody took the bait to. I was expecting the response of people with expensive motorhomes are more likely to be found parked in laybys and anywhere they didn't have to pay. I will have to learn to behave myself

I wouldn’t go on a £65 a night campsite, but then again you’ve no chance of finding a decent hotel all holiday cottage for that kind of money at peak time not unless it was a travel lodge

No problem for us then. We never go anywhere in peak times, and we've stayed in some very nice Travelodges for considerably less than £65 a night. On one occasion I remember we stayed at the Gatwick one overnight for just £9. We had a very early flight the next morning and wanted to be there before hand. Had a great night's sleep. It was on special offer though. Not sure I'd want to spend a week there though, there was nothing there but the airport.

The most expensive site I have been on charged £25 a night and the only reason I went there was because I was sharing with a mate so we paid £13.50 each, which is the sort of price I usually pay when solo camping. It was in a riverside location next to a pub but the facilities were a bit rough, so I guess the price was for the location.

Searles and the like have facilities which you are paying for, Lakeside ( the Don Ammott one) Seafield at Seahouses is our favorite these sort of site we use occasionally as a treat. Try pricing a Haven site for the same time and that will be extortionate

which would be understandable normally, but seeing as most if not all of the "facilities" will not be available, then £65 a night is well over the top! my mortgage doesn't cost anywhere near that even if you took into account all the services and charges for that!

At the end of the day you are just renting a patch of grass, electric, water and washroom facilities no matter what else the site has to offer.

If they have a pub you have to pay extra for the beer so why does the campsite charge extra for that facility? The scenery of course was there long before the campsite so why is there a charge for that? Other facilities campsites might provide are often charged extra, such as swimming pools, mini golf courses etc.

Now, if they had campsites with everything thrown in like on a cruise, it might be worth paying £65 a night. I just took a quick look at Iglu Cruises and a 12 night trip to the Canary Islands in November costs £649pp...that is only £54 a night.

I couldn't agree more Bob! One of the reasons I would avoid such a site. No way I would pay anything like £65 a night on a campsite, whatever "facilities" it offered. The only facilities I want are EHU, toilets and showers. In fact, I don't actually want anything else on the site, as it could make it noisy. I wouldn't want that all all!
