You have a point of course, but I would think that it would mainly apply to single people. I know that if either me or my wife had to isolate, we would divide the notifications between us. If we were just about to go on holiday, notifying the site would be one of our first priorities as it would be the main thing on our mind at the time. If one of us was actually taken seriously ill or had a bad accident, that might be different, but just getting a notification when we were both fine, the site would probably be our first priority. Anything else could wait.

Yes booking and not turning up does hit small businesses. It's bad for other people trying to make a booking too, and being told "sorry we're full up". I am more than happy to pay a deposit, or even the full amount if it's close to the time, as we often are. It would have to be really dire circumstances for us not to turn up when we have booked something, and we would NEVER make two bookings for the same time. That is just plain selfish and inconsiderate, or maybe we are just old-fashioned and that is considered normal these days.

Based on my experience as an event organiser, social butterflies who signed up to everything and turn up at just one event at the last minute or none at all, without informing the hosts, were usually female. However, their age ranged from 20s to 70s.
I would exclude no shows from future events that I organise - two strikes and they are out.
It is a bit harsh, however, I cannot tolerate bad manners and inconsideration.

Not harsh at all DK, I wouldn't even give them two strikes. If someone booked something with me and didn't bother to turn up or even inform me, I wouldn't accept any further bookings from them unless they paid in full up front, and signed a declaration stating that if they didn't turn up they agreed to forfeit their money. Good manners costs nothing.

On the other side of the coin, we recently had a group booking of 6 pitches over a weekend. Some 2 nights, and some 3 nights. We, the two of us on one pitch, subsequently stretched it to 4 nights by paying the extra in cash on site.
The bookings were No deposits, but paid in full 7 days before arrival, all by bank transfers.
Three pitches then had to cancel, during the final 3 day run in.
One cancellation was due to the pitch lead/driver being pinged and had to isolate (so 3 people on same pitch missed out).
The second was two people in caravan, cancelled due to being worried over (and unable to relax on a break away) whilst a close relative was literally rushed in for an unexpected and emergency Liver transplant to keep him alive! (I kid you not!). (Obviously they sat at home, unable to visit, and unable to help/achieve anything other than keep their fingers crossed).
Third cancellation was a solo tenter, also related to said patient, and travelling with case number two, so same thing there!
The site were made aware of the covid ping-related cancellation the day before arrival. They were unaware of the other two cancelled pitches until we arrived on site.
To their credit, and without anyone asking (as refunds were neither priority, nor expected!), the site kindly offered refunds, and subsequently refunded in full... in CASH to me, as the group lead, for me to hand back to the respective payers. (They did give the option of bank transfer refunds, but described cash refund as "Easier, with less paperwork!).
I'd call that a nice gesture at the very least. Above and beyond, even. Certainly unexpected.
So a big shout out, and a massive thanks from my relatives, to the management at Manor Farm, Anderby, Lincs.
  
*For info, the transplant went as expected, and due to covid worries in hospital, he was home again 5 days later, albeit on strict instruction to go nowhere, and allow no visitors! Latest is he's doing well, and recovery is all going to plan.
