Motorhomes and campervans cannot be banned on Mull because of the rules governing the ferries. If, like Colonsay, there was only one ferry route and that bookable, we could impose restrictions but we have three ferry routes only one of which is bookable and the rules prevent us.

Ferry fares are based on RET (road equivalent tariff) which has been both a help and a hindrance. These can't be changed at local government level either.

You are wrong in saying one can only camp on campsites. People are being advised to do so and book space but that has mainly come about because of reduced capacity on ferries and the numbers who thought they'd try and escape covid. Most people are doing this.

Tourist tax in Scotland has been under some debate but nothing very much has been said over the last couple of years and may well continue to be deferred.

I don’t know where you are in north Essex, billy, but do you have large numbers of motorhomes and campervans for several months of the year? Does your Council provide the facilities you say should be everywhere? And what’s everywhere? Some people want sea view and don’t mind others around them whilst others want peace and quiet away from a crowd.

No Tendring council does not provide facilities. There used to be plenty of overnight motorhome/camper van parking along Clacton seafront. Parking is mostly free for cars & the road is beside greensward before cliff top & people would set up all day & stop all night. I think most were ok but people complained & the council solution was a continuous parking ban for motorhome & camper vans.

The way forward would be a tourist tax on campsite & hotel users & paid for motorhome facilities. With reasonable charges that users are willing to pay.

The idea is to encourage tourists & not attempt methods of discouraging them. Car parking for example. While UK seaside towns charge extortionate rates French seaside places charge perhaps a € or 2 for all day & many do not charge at all because they have revenue from reasonable tourist tax charges & motorhome parking facilities.

All of this could work in UK but there simply is not the will or organisational skills to expedite it.

This has to be done at government level. All credit to locals for setting up a toilet tip. If the payment is optional & the site unattended I would guess some may put a quid or 2 in & many will not pay. So a subsidised facility instead of a revenue generating one. Which was the point I was making.

If I remember correctly the tourist tax consultation by Scottish Gov't had three options for administering such a tax. Many local authorities wanted control at their level to be able to manage their territory's needs as opposed to a blanket tax. Edinburgh is vastly different from Highland or Argyll.

Don't disagree that it's a potentially valuable tool in managing tourism (something that needs doing and it doesn't always equate to price) but it has got to be local, not centralised, collection - gov'ts aren't always great at sharing revenue - and therein lies a huge problem for those collecting the tax, especially smaller operators and bnbs.

There is an argument that established campsites would suffer if there were more motorhome cheaper stop offs as the camp sites still have to pay business and commercial charges. The tight-fisted of the MH element would presumably gravitate to the cheaper locations.

Was the Clacton issue because people were overnighting etc.?

Yes plenty were overnighting but as the road fronts grass greensward motorhomes could park all day. Roll out their awnings & set up like a campsite sometimes for a couple of days. Most weren’t leaving mess & there are plenty of nearby public toilets to empty their waste but there were complaints & then the parking ban. I suppose it was inevitable.

Decades since I was in Clacton but thought road at front, at least at the Holland end was quite wide so not like we get with them parked up on kerb with just the pavement between vehicle and house. Still, can understand some folks getting fed up if regular occurrence for months on end.
