The cost of electricity on sites is astronomical compared to what we pay at home. Even at £3 a night, about the lowest you can find anywhere now, we are paying far more than we pay for gas and electric combined at home, except maybe in mid winter with the central heating and tumble dryer on. That really came home to me a few years ago when we went on a site with metered electricity, and we used less that £3 in a whole two weeks!

Regarding site prices in general, we will stick to our normal budget and if we can't find a site for that we will either go for a shorter time or not go at all. We haven't even started looking yet as we rarely book more than a few days ahead. Didn't have any problem last year.

Colin

I’m guessing it’s been discussed plenty of times, just having a rant!!

6 nights from 6 March 2022 for two adults and 1 4 year old - average price seems to be around £210.

Just had a look back to my holiday in France last year, 10 nights at Plage de Riez in Vendee September 2021 - £192.

The price of campsites is becoming an absolute rip off.

Spent 6 nights at Bron Y Wendon in North Wales last year and the cost was £150, just checked again as it was a nice site, £240 - how can they possibly justify these prices for a bit of land for 6 nights?

It must be remembered that we have already seen a huge price increase in the cost of electric and another increase is expected in April 2022. People run campsites to make a profit and not out of the goodness of their hearts.
We do not like the increases, but can understand why some campsites have increased their prices as other costs have also risen i.e. fuel for grass gutting, gas, cleaning agents plus this year we are paying the full VAT rate and not the previous lower rate of I think about 12%.

Sounds decent to me mate, especially the cider 👍

Indeed!

It is not the type of sites where I would normally stay, being only 6A EHU and no facilities block etc...

However, it is local and the management was so nice and enthusiastic about their pub and campsite, especially the improvements already planned, it is hard not to like it. And I like ciders!

It is only for 2 nights and I can rough it. And I have already booked and paid for 4 nights in late October 2022 - hopefully the facilities block will be finished and EHU supply upgraded by then.

Most EHU are around £5 pn which is £150 per quarter, not much different to a house bill but without multiple large screen TVs, computers, monitors, fridge, freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, multiple lights, etc, etc. In reailty £5 is so much more than a pitch would actually use.
However, the price of a pitch is not determined by costs plus a profit margin, its decided by what the seller feels they can get for it. If they can double the price and still fill the site then why wouldnt they ? Thats the country we live in. Thats the financial philosophy of the party in government. You pay it or you dont. No point in complaining.

£5 a night is still way more than we pay at home, and that includes all our gas and electricity in a centrally heated 3 bed house with washing machine, tumble dryer, and all the usual appliances such as TV.

When we went on a site with metered electricity 2 or 3 years ago, we only spent under £3 for the whole two weeks. Admittedly that was just battery charging, fridge, and occasional use of a low-wattage kettle. We would use a bit more today as our caravan now has an electric water heater instead of the gas one we had back then.

Hi
I was chatting to a local CL owner this week, he said he's now at the end of a two year fixed price on his electric. He was paying 16 pence per kilowatt. Now, he can't find anything for less than 48 pence per kilowatt. That's obviously got to be paid for, guess it will be the customer.

This will also be happening to people at home. Scary.

Even non-EHU pitches have shot up in price too.

I was looking at hypothetically booking a C&CC site for mid-May. Even with the member's discount a normal sized (i.e. not jumbo) tent pitch without electric is £41 - £72 for two nights!

We'll keep our membership, but only to access CS places.

More than likely the CL EHU is derived from one of the phases off a three phase supply which could be why the cost per kw is higher than domestic rate. This applies to many caravan parks especially those that have statics and also have Half Hourly metering.
