Just back from a couple of weeks stay, midweek to midweek, on a full CAMC site in the Lake District, and it was never full, got close over w/e's with mostly single nighters, one w/e because of a 'Festival of Light torchlight procession up Cat Bells', but outside of w/e I doubt it was 50% full, and this is the height of holiday season! OK, no toilet or showers on site, so only self contained units accepted, but at only £21.50/night, it's cheap by today's pricing and a lovely site in a stunning location. Wardens told me bookings are well down this year (I was told the CCC site at Keswick was also quiet!), has the Covid inspired 'camping bubble' finally burst, has the industry priced itself (more in general than this 'cheap' site) out of business, or has the generally lousy weather this year dampened demand? Certainly the CAMC has been having a rethink, prices are down, deposits are down etc. in an attempt to boost bookings! .... and I can't think of previous years where they have thrown quite so many promotional communications at me!
I had a week in the Peak District booked since Jan for an annual rally, and was undecided if to go to the Lakes before or after that week based on weather forecast, and leaving booking until last minute to get the most relevant insight into weather. Rather expected not to find a vacancy at such short notice bearing in mind it was high season, but really didn't fancy a week or more of foul weather (I've had a fortnight of heavy persistent rain in July a few years back when staying in caravan in Coniston, REALLY was not the best of holidays!), so willing to gamble. Turns out it was a non-existent concern, vacancies galore! Booked Lakes for after my Peak District stay, the day before I left for PD, with no problems at all! Good timing on weather, rather nice, with only a couple of bad wet days, so all turned out exceptionally well. Wouldn't normally rely on getting exactly what I wanted at such short notice in the height of the season and a popular site, but not a problem this time!
