Agree with Ulti-mates, Brean's local to us and we go there quite often for a weekend - would'nt dream of staying longer than 3 or 4 nights. Of course it all depends what you want from a holiday, we've got 3 young children and they all love a beach. Now the beach at brean is fine but it's not much good if you want to go for a dip (too much mud), or crabbing, or surfing. Brean is very popular with the Chav fraternity, and the V.Pollards, not that I've ever seen any trouble but they do have a few clubby type bars in the summer and a few sites that take single sex groups. If this is going to be your main summer holiday travel a bit further into Devon or Cornwall. We went to the Perranporth area last year and loved it, although the traffic can be heavy going in the summer months.
Next year we're going back to either the Gower, which we love, or West Wales.

Brean is not too far for us and ok for a weekend but not a week.  The sea goes far out and the beach can be dangerous.  A young girl died in the mud there a couple of years back, like quicksand.  Cheddar is lovely but I would opt for Cornwall any day.

But some love it, so depending what you are looking for, you might too.  Seems a strange choice to actualy travel any distance to though when you consider what options there are within that range.  It does though have Mr Mayhem  :-)

Anyway, its far too posh for me in my "commercial van"

Hope you enjoy yourselves wherever you go.

I think everyone is being a bit unfair. I lived in Brean for 6 years and I loved it there. It all depends on what you want out of a holiday. I used to go there when I was a kid and loved it. Though I must say there are better places around. If you like walking in countryside then Cornwall is definitely the place to go. If you're after decent clubs then Brean's not really the place, it's more of a family resort. All the sites and pubs there are aimed at family entertainment. They have a decent (though expensive) fun park and the general overall feel of the place is quite welcoming. You do get a lot of Welsh and Bristol chavs about but where in Britain don't you nowadays. If you are thinking of coming to the South West I would continue into Cornwall. I live here now and don't ever intend moving. But beware of the traffic. There is only 1 way in and out of Cornwall (the A30) and in the high season it can take up to 7 hours to travel 80 miles. The worst of the traffic comes just before you reach Bodmin so I would advise travelling mid week reaching Cornwall either very early or late evening. If you're coming out of season the traffics not too bad though I would still expect to wait around Goss Moor and Truro in rush hour.

Anyway have a nice holiday wherever you go.....

Brean V Cornwall (even with all the traffic congestion). Cornwall would win hands down.  I grew up in Bristol and Brean was local for the odd Sunday out or a weekend away. Several years on after moving away from the south west - last summer revisited Brean with my 2 kids for a weekend. What a dissapointment!!! Never again!!! Foul language ALL weekend long. Police on the campsite several times - never found out why though.  It was boring and in my opinion rough - maybe just an unlucky weekend away but I will NEVER return.  There are lots on here (Mr Mayhem included) that sing its praises and lots that go back for more!! Horses for Courses and all that but its not for us!!

Greetings Everyone,

I am only praising Brean from what I know and have seen.

It is my personal experience that the place it self can do with a facelift but then again there are many places a lot worse.

I only post on here for two reasons :-

1) To keep in touch with those people who come down and see my show

2) To meet and chat with some fine people.

Everyone has their own opinions about the place, but it is where I do my job and its a nice place to be.

Regards all

Mr Mayhem

Brean is only an hour for us, but we don't even go there for the afternoon - got better things to do with our time.

Brean versus Cornwall C'mon make it fair  try Brean versus spaghetti junction or brean versus M25 motorway. any way if you don't want to do all the way into cornwal try north devon

The good thing about Brean is that once you get there you are only three hours from Cornwall at the most. Please, please get up three hours earlier and have a brilliant holiday. Trevornick in Holywell Bay http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=2685 is great.

We live not far from Brean and I only ever go there to fish in the winter, the beach is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, there have been several fatalaties in the recent years and only yesterday the rescue hovercraft went out to warn a young couple who were walking out on the mudflats nearly a mile out.
I have also had my car broken into twice while fishing, there are gangs of youths who wait in the dunes till you walk to the beach and then break in,although to be fair this can happen anywhere nowadays.
Cornwall is very nice but in my opinion can be a bit overcrowded in high season and I prefer the south east devon or west dorset area.

Went to brean many a time as a kid and always thought it was miles away .Now some 20 odd years on I would say brean is ok for a weekend break or an overnight stop en route to the south west north/south devon or cornwall all worth exploring .
