I think it all depends when you travel. We have just returned from a week near Newquay and had no problems whatsoever but we travelled down early Sunday morning and back home on Friday at teatime. But the potential for mega queues is enormous. The alternative route to North Cornwall is The Atlantic Highway (or A39). We travelled on this one day while we were on hols and werre pleased we hadn't used it for our arrival journey as it's signle carriagway all the way so if you get stuck behind someone towing a tin tent then your'e stuck behind them for a long time!!!!! We made sure that we stocked the car up with lots of drinks and snacks as we'd envisaged queuing for miles but fortunately didn't need them. The upside is of course that we'll all benefit from the roadworks next summer - as they're scheduled to finish in April '07.

Sorry a bit late but my two penneth. We have just got back from two weeks at Trevornick in Holywell Bay. Going down, we set off at 3:30 am from Manchester on the Sat morning and hit the Innis Downs roadworks - took an hour to get through (bear in mind this was a week before most school holidays started). Finally arrived on site at 11:30ish.

Coming back this last Saturday we decided to go the A39 route and join the A30 at Launceston. It was on the whole fine but coming the other way there was a big queue going Westbound into Camelford where it is one lane. This was probably better though than the A30 where Pirate FM were reporting 90 minute delays.

I would definitely recommend travelling Friday night and stopping at a layby after these roadworks.

Anyway, the holiday was excellent and couldn't have picked a better two weeks weather wise (apart from Saturday when we had to pack up in the rain).

Good luck.

I live in Devon.  I commute to work daily on the M5 down to Exeter Airport.

the M5  is now clear of roadworks,....on the A30 the 1st set you will hit is MERRYMEET/WHIDDON DOWN services where they are doing roundabout works

what ever you do, my advice is DO NOT STOP AT THESE SERVICES!

We called in last Saturday just to pick up a paper and it was bedlam....beeping horns, queues, boats, caravans, angry drivers....absolutely mental.

Okehampton/Belstone services appeared quieter.

Ah the joys of heading West during the summer. One of the reasons we avoid Cornwall at this time of year. I just cant see the atraction of the place now. Apart from the senery what is there?. If you want better weather come further East. Oh, on second thoughts er.... don,t.

THUMPER.

living in Devon all my life we have had easy access to Cornwall so have been regular visitors for yonks...however, like you for us Cornwall has become too busy and pricey (especially the rip off parking)....of course I appreciate that they have to make money out of the tourists (living in Devon its much the same)...but it has lost its appeal to us.

We prefer scottish highlands for our main holiday and close by we go to Dorset now...very pretty there.

This is a route which may help you, instead of going down the A30/A39, try the local footballers route instead which is normally better.

Go down the A38 to Plymouth and carry on to Liskeard/Dobwalls- then cut down towards St Austell. (note Dobwalls is turned into the biggest roundabout in the world in the height of summer!) When you get to St Austell, ignore signs for Newquay, instead go towards BUGLE.(A391). When you get to Bugle, follow the local roads towards Roche, In Roche (by the Spar shop) follow the back roads towards St Dennis. In St Dennis go under the railway bridge (by the football ground) and this will rejoin the main A30 at the Newquay turn off.

If this sounds long and complex, bear in mind, by missing the A30-A39, I have got from Plymouth to Newquay in 45 minutes and Plymouth to Penzance/Porthleven in the middle of August doing this route (and no not by speeding). It's a locals route. Great for campers, caravans it's passable.

Thanks for that Daz, there is another way on the way to Roche when you come to Combellicks scrap yard turn left follow signs to Whitemoor, after that to St Dennis  then head to Indian Queens which will bring you out on Indian Queens Roundabout on the A30
