I have seen THREE places this year with the tent part of the signs outside their sites taped over!

People have less disposable income these days (did I hear credit crunch ?) and therefore I imagine less people can afford wheeled accomodation.

I was hoping to get a short-haul weekend in Northumberland at a site a colleague has taken his family in a tent to before, but their website stated they no longer accept tents.

I LOVE tent camping and spend as much time as possible camping but I hate being treat like a "poor relation" or "second-class citizen".

Riff,

Proctors Stead at Craster and Budle Bay both still takes tents, give them a ring. It may be hard to get in as the holidays are looming. There's a lovely site near Wooler, my mate goes all the time, but I can't think of their name.

Good Luck,

Jackie

I was wondering whether the price of petrol (ok its coming down a bit this week but long term its supposed to be staying on the up and up) would also deter some people from towing if money starts to get tight at home.

In the 'Dornafield' thread I started yesterday I was reporting another campsite which is closing its tent field from the end of the 2009 summer season. From a business pov I can entirely see why: their caravan pitches earn money most of the year round and their tent field is only open for about five months in the summer. But I do feel stupidly upset about it. We've been going to that site for eleven years, since my son was seven. I have so many, many happy memories of being there and watching him and his mates growing up.  Sunday night I was sat outside my tent there on a glorious evening, a different generation of  young families were having the same great time we always had, I was looking forward to many more camping trips there and ...  now its for next year only  . Ah well, life moves on I guess. MT

Plan A was to go to a site near Rothbury but they have joined the "no tents brigade". Fortunately, I've found a C&CC Certified Site in the Hexham/Corbridge area, I'll let you know how we get on!

I've camped at Highburn House in Wooler (is that where you mean?) but we fancied somewhere a bit closer to home (i.e. further south) for a one-nighter.

Just had a real giggle at this thread and the other that NicholaJayne linked to.  I LOVE the rivalry between tenters and caravanners.

We're human beings - we have to have 'them' to blame.

And we could always gang up together against the owners of those HUGE American-style coach things lol

I think the main purpose and discussion of this thread has been about an apparent reduction in the number of camp sites/pitches for tents, which is a real shame, rather than trying to wind up some kind of spat between tenters and caravanners. Yes there were a couple of posts veering in that direction but I think it managed to get back on topic! MT

It's called discrimination. People who use tents are no different to people who choose to stay in caravans so why do people think of them and treat them as different. (not all people i don't mean)

I know this is off topic but i feel the same as some of you as i have 2 dogs yet 1 is welcome on sites that accept dogs and sometimes 1 is not and it makes me so mad as i can find  a lovely site and then get to the T&C's and give up.

A campsite is just that caravans and tents should be accepted and the same with sites that accept dogs it should apply to ALL campers and ALL dogs.

When a person or dog misbehaves then evict the party end of don't tar all with the same brush.
