HI nora
i hope you manage to convince OH as you would enjoy Scotland you could try staying on the east coast and day tripping to the highlands but then you would miss the most spectacular sunsets the west coast is the most beautiful bit of scotland (but i may be biased )
as for the midges avon skin so soft does work my wife used to be a midge meal every time she opened the door but since using avon she has never been bitten
Here in the East, we don't have midgies, but we do have dolphins, seals and whales. They don't bite.
If you haven't seen it, watch the North Coast 500 on BBC ALBA iPlayer. You'll see examples of the midgie menace in September. The fact is that there are midgies in the west of Scotland. Also true is that some people aren't bothered by them while other people's lives are made hell. You might be lucky.
Don't let that deter you. I assume you'd prepare for wet days by taking waterproofs, so prepare for midgies with Avon 'Skin so soft' or other repellent. If needs be, wear a hat with a midgie net.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

We have them at the West coast too. A pod of dolphins off Culzean a few weeks ago, Arran & Bute are thick with seals & I've seen Minke whale in the Clyde. Not seen a basking shark yet though, but they pass through. The Tay dolphins do put on a good show off Broughty Ferry, I must say - I've not seen that bow-wave leaping over here.
I swell up badly with midge bites, OH isn't bothered at all but gets bitten by clegs. So - we carry anti-histamine tablets (Aldi ones are cheap & work fine) to take away the itch. Sorted.
Please don't let the midges put you off coming north - I've been plagued by them in Norfolk & Cumbria - if they really are bad (most likely in flat calm conditions) you just move on to another site. I've been all over Scotland & had a great trip whichever area I've gone to. You can't go wrong - just follow the sun and drive away from the rain.
