Yes - the struggle and Kirkstone were good too. If you're up that way we can also recommend the mine visit at Honistor Slate Mine at the top of Honistor Pass. It's absolutely incredible!

Also on the Eskdale side of Hardknott at Boot is to be fond the Brookside Inn - more great food in hearty quantities.

Cheers

Come on folks be honest - there's not a spot in the Lakes that is not spectacular or lovely when you are out of the towns. And even then the old houses are lovely.

We have just got back from the Lakes (stayed at the excellent Church Stile Farm Site at Nether Wasdale)...

We got stuck at the steepest part (hairpin bend past Roman Fort) and wife & daughter got out as there screams & tears were making me nervous! (we have a long wheelbase 2.5 ltr VW T5)... I ended up backing up into a grassy area and turning around... If anyone else has a T32 T5 the handbrake is useless & won't work on here.  We went back the next day (only as far as Roman Fort) to take pics etc... the views are superb.

For info the T5 managed the Honister Pass ok & I am sure it would have gone up Wynose ok.. but I was'nt allowed.

I have always found it easier doing the passes East to West. 'That' hairpin bend on Hardknott is simpler going down :)

Wife won't dare drive it, but I can't do a trip to Lakes without driving over. You can always pop into Fisherground to let the car cool down :)

I did it last week for the first time (slightly by accident) whilst heading to our Eskdale site and although hairy in a car I did enjoy it, I quite like challenging driving.

I would say a huge massive no go in anything bigger than a camper van.  A motorhome got stuck down there the day after we were there and had to turn back - which I gather was an interesting manoeuvre!

On the plus side it does cut a lot off the journey when heading across to that side.

I've done it twice, the first time was beautiful, stunning scenery but the second time it was drizzling and by the time we got near the top you couldn't see past the end of the car bonnet!!! Now that WAS scary!

We drive hardknott & wrynose quite often. But reading this thread reminds me of when there was 5 of us all late teens in a 1.3 Vauxhall Chevette Estate loaded up to the hilt with camping gear on a Aug bank holiday. We had got quite a way up & the clutch started stinking & slipping, the car was struggling to move so my friend who was driving suggested we all got out & pushed. He pulled the handbrake on & the cable snapped at this point we started rolling backwards all thinking that we was going to die, thankfully he managed to steer into the edge of the hillside/ditch leaving the car strewn across the road. We all got out not knowing what to do & there was a line of vehicle behind us as far as the eyes could see. If we could have walked away we would have done. After a few Min's we could see a range rover working his way past the vehicles towards us. This very big chap got out & without saying anything put a tow rope on both vehicle & nodded to my mate to get in & pulled our stricken vehicle to the forte car park at the top, he took his rope of & grunted something about the scrapyard. We was thankful of his help nevertheless.

Hi,

Can anyone advise how long the average journey from Little Langdale to Boot lasts?
