Clachtoll has a gorgeous beach but it can get really windy. On the plus side the wind keeps the midges away !

Gairloch Sands is a huge site with plenty of pitches, best to try for a sheltered one though ! As Gordon C said, if you fancy "wilding it" Mellon Udrigle is a bit special!

Wild camping on Harris, stunning scenery !

But for me Arisaig just has to be the best, there's quite a few sites to choose from, most of them right on the beach.

For anyone who's thinking of going to Fiunary, you can avoid about half the single track road section by crossing to Mull from Oban and from Fishnish to Lochaline - get a hopscotch ticket - it's cheaper!  If you're heading down to Lochaline from Strontian or Corran, there is a long climb up from Loch Sunart but it has plenty of passing places and mostly downhill traffic will get out of your way.  The timber lorries (which are enormous) use this route so you should be fine on width.  Also, aside from a couple of sections, there's long views ahead so it's easy to guage when you'll meet another vehicle.  Also, right now, the road up to Drimnin (beyond Fiunary) is getting resurfaced so you should have a smoother ride in future.

We toured Scotland in 2015 using the North Coast 500 route and found many fantastic places. The beach sites we visited were Arisaig and Durness. Arisaig Highland games were on while we were there. Also on the Isle of Skye the Highland Games are fantastic. You can march behind the Bagpipe Band from the town to the Highland Games site. A wonderful experience.

Dumfries & Galloway for us. Sites owned by the small Gillespie Leisure group - Sandyhills, Brighouse Bay, plus other private sites e.g. by the beach at Mossyard. I dearly love the west & east & north coasts too, but SW Scotland is a day or two off the journey from the south, there's plenty to do, equally dark skies, amazing sunsets, views of the Lake District without its crowds, and good quiet roads.

2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.
