I have never understood why some people object to others camping with electric. I am 65 years old this year and only started using EHU about 3 years ago, and only then because I had booked myself in for a New Year meet and didn't want to die of hypothermia. I now realise what I was missing.

I think I served my apprenticeship sat in cold and damp tents wrapped up like michelin man trying to boil a kettle on a windswept cooker with frozen fingers and pretend I am enjoying the experience.

I can now go camping in some comfort and enjoy mostly the ability to heat my SIG tent so I can sit in comfortable unrestrictive clothing and relax more. I also like the ability to be able to get up in the morning and boil an electric kettle inside my tent for that first lovely cuppa without having to get dressed and go outside in all weathers.

Then, if I want to experience the great outdoors I can still stoke up my gas cooker outside, and cook myself a nice greasy breakfast the same as everyone else, or cremate half a cow on a barbie.

I am not an IT buff so mobile phones, TV's, laptops, etc; are not my thing when away but if someone is using electric anyway then why should they not enjoy plugging anything they want into it.

They used to have slow steam trains but now have high speed electric ones. It is nice to see a steam train, and as nice as it might be for all of us to go back to the sleepy days of steam and horse drawn coaches, life has moved on, and the same goes for camping.

But, if anyone wants to continue camping using the old methods then good luck to them.

Couldn't agree more!  Given that the OP has children aged 3 and 5, I assume that OP is fairly young.  When he gets to his 60s, perhaps he will feel differently!

We go camping with friends who don't use EHU. I don't notice them moaning about our EHU when they are keeping their milk in our fridge!

Its all a matter of preference. As Heath63 says we use EHU now that we have two kids...its nice to know we can keep them comfortable. As someone says its not an indurance test.

If we weren't camping with our EHU we'd be flying off somewhere causing far most damage to the environment! Or at home with all the mod cons. So we're far more environmentally friendly when camping even with EHU!!

That is what makes me smile about environmentally friendly campsites. Usually, a green field full of all manner of wild creatures is mown down. Then it is dug up to lay water pipes and maybe electricity cables and drainage systems. Part of it is built on for the facilities including drainage, sewerage and dustbin areas. Then hundreds of people arrive and set up temporary homes and any remaining wildlife is by now well and truly in the next county. Then David Bellamy arrives and awards it 5 stars for being environmentally friendly...'e's 'avin' a larf ain't e?

Totally agree with you Bob, just like most other "green" projects including all the derelict wind farms in the States and other countries.

I dont see anything wrong with using EHU. During the winter its good for heating the place up. When its raining and you want a hot drink you can boil the kettle. If you need info on the local area then plug the laptop in. If you like a bit of music whilst round the campfire, put the mp3 player on. Camping is a holiday and if makes your holiday easier or more enjoyable then each to there own. I mentioned on that thread about somewhere to plug straightners in for the ladies because some people dont want to walk around with big bushy hair after its been washed.

You've summed it up so well Bob, that's exactly how I feel about it

I am a lover of my creature comforts, we always take our TV away with us, we enjoy to site and watch tv/dvd's thats how we chill out, we have got gas cooker and heat in our Campervan, but always prefer to have electric.

I have done tenting with and without EHU but now prefer to have my beloved EHU so I can power my tv or charge my phone or camera...

I am fine with personal choice but some posters are saying that its essential for a campsite which is simply is not. Its not essential and plenty of campsites dont have it. Plenty or campers (I would actually say the majority) I have seen at campsites dont have a hookup. Its personal choice and also about the choice of campsites you visit. Fine to hook up but my personal choice is not to and have the freedom of a farmers field with a toilet block or portaloo in the corner.

I never look for EHU but as everyone says down to personal choice. I like running on 12v and with LED lighting and an 80watt solar unit I also run satellite tv recharge phones and use our vans shower (12v electric pump)etc and have never had my 110amp battery fall below three quarters charge on 3 and 4 week holidays, even before I bought the solar panel 3 days away on 12v was no problem which is why I have never understood the use of generators

I have just returned from a two day camp and I have never known it so cold. Even with the electric heater on all night I was perished and yet I am usually quite warm.

I think I will definitely be getting rid of the big bag of freezing cold air and buying a camp bed...and an electric blanket!

Quote: To me camping is all about the experience of being out in a field close to nature with the outside world at your doorstep, spending the evening talking round a fire, going to bed when its dark and up when its light (within reason).

and thats wonderful for you - its your choice. For me - I wouldnt be camping without EHU, for the heater, kettle, fridge and George Foreman grill thing.

As I said in another thread, I love driving .... but I choose to do it in a car with electric windows, AC, cruise control, big fat stereo. I could do the same trip in a reliant robin .... but I'd rather be comfy how I like.

EHU doesnt take away from being close to nature you know .. we're all in the same field!

Not that close to nature...the whirring of the fridge frightens it all away
