Yes, I agree. Dumfries % Galloway to the west, Peebles and Melrose to the centre and Berwick upon Tweed to the east.
More than enough for a week and then come back further north when you have a longer break.

Thanks again for the massive amount of information shared over the last week or so.. I've also found when contacting sites that a lot seem to be full for next week so we're having a rethink and planning a longer trip in the future and a little more out of season. We're starting in Bedfordshire so it is a long way to go when you then can't stay in the places you want to!

Bedfordshires where I hail from originally! Done the drive a lot. It's not bad at all I usually just stop just after/before Manchester for a quick coffee and natures call. just beware the m6, although it's usually always preferable to the A1. If your thinking of heading more to the borders come off at the Carlisle junction onto the A7 there. I love driving that road, some stunning scenery :)
