I am willing to concede that perhaps my experience of the C&CC was 'unusual' but whilst I found the staff to be exemplary (as are the staff on the majority of campsites I have visited) the 'tent' pitches on the two sites I was able to visit whilst a member were atrocious. One had just hardened mud and tree roots (dread to think what it would be like in winter) and the other was full of rabbit holes and scrapings.
I managed to get my deposit back from the site with no grass and half a mile down the road I found a non-club site with plush grassy pitches. It cost about £2 extra a night I believe (£12) but was well worth it.
As Bernie has indicated, pitches as described above would not cause too many problems for wheeled units but tents were not considered too highly on the agenda.
I also visited a Camping in the Forest site which I believe is affiliated to the C&CC and that was full of muddy holes and puddles...not very pleasant. They also had difficulty finding me an EHU point I could reach from a dry pitch due to them being randomly scattered around the site.
Club sites and suitable CS's were thin on the ground in the areas I wanted to camp so I normally had to use commercial sites as well, so by the time I had paid my club membership fee and also lost a non-returnable deposit because I had to cancel at the last minute due to forecast gale force winds, the year of my club membership cost me two arms and two legs!!.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
My own feeling is that, as far as Club Sites are concerned, paulandsue and Bernie have rather hit the nail on the head - tenters are now very much second class citizens. I and friends who are tenters have had much the same experience as Bob61 - the exception being Speyside last August where I had a lovely pitch. This increasing state of affairs (including how much m/cs and caravanners in our party were treated when it came to pitches for little money more than we paid) was not the main reason I packed the C&CC in but very close to it.
In fairness, I use both CCC and independent sites and wouldn't knock the stardard of Club sites and I also only camp at present in conjunction with events so CSs aren't always around or may not have a loo.
