Thank
You so much for all your help, suggestions and kindness. We had an amazing camp at Calgary. The official part and toilets are open indeed. We camped in the very far opposite corner just below the car park
To the tiny cafe. Not even a tent was needed in a wonderful camping spot in lovely weather. Knockvologan and Kilvekion were fenced off and we decided not to go any further into the farm for fear of offending the owners. I assume that would have been our route to the beaches.

Mull at the height of summer in good weather is pretty hard to beat. Glad you had a good trip.

When I went to Knockvologan I went along the road past Fidden campsite then through a gate past a farm then past a small car park/house on the left and down a path onto the beach. I don't know if there's an alternative route. I'm glad you enjoyed Calgary.

Bill, very glad you had a good time and you were able to stay at Calgary - good to know it's open as, even this morning, someone local to there was saying it was shut!!

Mayhem

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/island-tells-tourists-this-isnt-magaluf-zbb7kpqs7

Is it as bad as the article says Ficklejade? I was considering a trip in September (campsite, not wild) but having read that and seen some of the hate posted on the Mull Facebook pages I don't think I'll risk it - some posts have been aimed at all visitors not just the idiots. A shame that the "Magaluf" crowd are messing it up for those of us who've visited for years.

Speaker12, as I've said elsewhere, booked on a campsite, no problem and there's a lot of folk here behaving fine. I've only just seen this article myself (just been reading it and following up on the FB pages, too. Sadly, there has been some disgusting behaviour by a few (not just m/homers but someone down of the Ross has been reported very recently) but it seems to be fairly common across the highlands. I've not been out and about much because I'm trying to keep safe so I can get my neck operation so I've no evidence. Tob is certainly suddenly much busier (though not at normal levels. Most visitors are being reasonable, just a few are not.

A number of the FB posts have been from a sector of the community that (shall I say) is rather fond of saying they speak for all (without engaging with the "all") whilst others are from people who are concerned about the sudden influx into a community that, just a few short weeks ago, could not leave the island except in dire emergency and only then with photo ID, proof of reason for going and proof of residence to get back. There is a genuine worry that we were opened up a bit too quickly, more because there has been, throughout the highlands, an influx of less respectful campers of all varieties but that doesn't mean a wholesale hatred and it's not true. It really infuriates me that things get so polarized and I'm not happy about some locals' attitudes implying visitors aren't welcome. Unfortunately, the afore-mentioned speakers for all are also, on occasions, somewhat unpleasant to the locals that disagree with their views, which is why the moderates tend to keep quiet and work away quietly!!

Many regular visitors are asking before coming because they don't want to risk locals who many know but they've been reassured. I hope this helps - I believe that you'll be very welcome.

Thanks, I'll see how things go. I imagine by September we'll be largely back in lockdown anyway with the clusters that are appearing now in Manchester, Aberdeen etc.

There was one particular Facebook post, 2 or 3 days ago, about visitors When I had a look at the posters profile she was from California and had only lived on Mull for 10 minutes! It's probably better if I keep away from the pages, they give seem to give a distorted view of the island.

Whilst I fear we may go back, truly hope not! If only people would behave reasonably, we might not come to that. Our schools go back on 12 August - so could see changes as a result of that.

Your second para highlighted another part of the problem; many incomers come and don't like change or else want to change to suit them. I've been here over 18 years and I'm prepared to fight my corner or join others' "fights" but through the proper channels not on FB and always having done research first. FB is great in some ways, but not in others as it tends to become a soapbox. Remember, too, that many people aren't on FB - some, even in Tobermory, have no idea of some things going on about the place but are assumed to know and agree with those who shout loudest!

I'll do my best to help out so just ask and I'll try and get honest answers.
