Speaker12, as I've said elsewhere, booked on a campsite, no problem and there's a lot of folk here behaving fine. I've only just seen this article myself (just been reading it and following up on the FB pages, too. Sadly, there has been some disgusting behaviour by a few (not just m/homers but someone down of the Ross has been reported very recently) but it seems to be fairly common across the highlands. I've not been out and about much because I'm trying to keep safe so I can get my neck operation so I've no evidence. Tob is certainly suddenly much busier (though not at normal levels. Most visitors are being reasonable, just a few are not.
A number of the FB posts have been from a sector of the community that (shall I say) is rather fond of saying they speak for all (without engaging with the "all") whilst others are from people who are concerned about the sudden influx into a community that, just a few short weeks ago, could not leave the island except in dire emergency and only then with photo ID, proof of reason for going and proof of residence to get back. There is a genuine worry that we were opened up a bit too quickly, more because there has been, throughout the highlands, an influx of less respectful campers of all varieties but that doesn't mean a wholesale hatred and it's not true. It really infuriates me that things get so polarized and I'm not happy about some locals' attitudes implying visitors aren't welcome. Unfortunately, the afore-mentioned speakers for all are also, on occasions, somewhat unpleasant to the locals that disagree with their views, which is why the moderates tend to keep quiet and work away quietly!!
Many regular visitors are asking before coming because they don't want to risk locals who many know but they've been reassured. I hope this helps - I believe that you'll be very welcome.
