I can see bigducks & everbodyelses arguments on this. Yes the UK is expensive & its not only in camping but just about everything else !!!!!! I,m a great beliver in you get what you pay for. If I want an all singing / dancing site with EHU, clubhouse, activitys for kids etc etc. Then I realise I,m gonna have to fork out for it. On the other hand if I only want a place to doss down the night with basic facititys then I don,t expect to fork out that much. My fave site in the Wye Valley is only £1 pppn !!! Ok its only got porta loos & a stand pipe but its never crowded, sited in glorious surroundings & a decent village pub is only 10mins walk away. There are cheap sites out there if you scratch around & dont mind geting back to basics.

Can only agree with Thumper. We are booked to go away this year to Cornwall in July and August early and August late. There are six of us and I am paying roughly £200 to £300 for each week. However I think that is good value as they are all sites with bars, restraunts, pools etc and I think a comparable price in a Travel Lodge might be £50 per night.
Have not tried camping abroad so I cannot make any comparison there.
Camping is not cheap, all in all. We chose to try camping this year because we thought it would be a cheap means of getting away - we are skint since we had our baby and I have not returned to work. All in all, even keeping equipment to a minimum, the costs are escalating. We need a site with good showers/toilets and a kids play area so that we don't find ourselves forking out extra money to entertain our toddler...We'll be visiting Anglesey mostly this year and are trying to organise our trips around the summer BH's to maximise my OH's hols. I have not come across anything close to £10 for these peak periods. At least £15 and more usually £20. But trying to book any of these places, they are full or getting that way, so people are prepared to pay the prices. Admittedly you can really take any other kind of hol for this money, but also wouldn't find yourself in a field, with a bucket as your ensuite. I have found the prices depressing. If we could afford the passport renewals, we would definitely be heading to France.
I think recent articles claiming a camping revival must be true - camping is the new cool, because I'm not convinced that people do it for the cheapness. I'll be looking for the no of Landrover Vogues on the sites this year to see if this theory pans out!!!

Oh and one other thing, I find the club sites(C&CC/CC) rather expensive also - by the time you pay for your unit, 2 kids and 2 adults thay seen to work out about as expensive as the private sites, so I must say that I havent been able to see any advantage in joining yet, unless Im'j missing something?
I have looked at web pages for houses to rent in the Vendee as I have been thinking about renting out my place in the future ......some prices for houses within easy reach of the beaches ...within 30/40 minutes .....compare with peak time site pitch costs. per week .closer to the sand the dearer they are ...With Nantes and La Rochelle airports covered by cheap flights it can be a money saver option to rent a house and car hire ......but..... do you want to be on your own in a village house in France ?.......the sites have facilities for kids ,,, restaurants ...pools.... bars ..discos in the evening .....and mini supermarkets on site ...all to be staffed ..... lots of wages to pay ..its ...horses for courses.... If your kids are bored in your company at home they will be in a house on holiday they cant just wander off of an evening meet up with other kids and find a football . I have stayed in a static at La Guarangoire on one occasion for almost 3 weeks because it was a special offer for couples and not worth dragging the caravan down....you have to check out all the options .. and .you can save money .
