Hello EMS1976

You really have started a debate!

I must admit only been camping 3 seasons and I was asked for deposit this season, 1st time, and was surprised.

Other campsites Ive been to didnt even ask for a deposit, and two I like, you dont book, just turn up, First come first served so to speak, which I like cos hubby works away and sometimes arrives home later than expected.

As the payment system was not explained, i would have been annoyed too,  so, enjoy Forest Fields .

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

I like picking my own pitch too but wouldnt dream of doing so without booking in first, with the caravan club you turn up, book in then drive around the site and choose a pitch at your leisure, set up then go back to reception and let them know which number you're on.

The only downside is that if you're going with friends you can't guarantee you'll get pitches next to each other whereas if you prebook specific pitches you have peace of mind you can.

People saying that the deposit should be refunded should they not be able to come etc that is the exact reason of the deposit. If you arrived having paid say a £20 deposit then decided it was to wet so wanted to leave and at the same time wanted your deposit back, from the campsite point of view why charge a deposit if you give it back to the customer if they don't want to stay. So a deposit is there for that exact reason.

Also I would find it very rude to look at your pitch before going to reception. You wouldn't go to a hotel and check your room before going to reception. You would most likely be asked to leave.

I'm sure people think anything goes at campsites!!1

If i turn up at a site, where there has been heavy rain or a severe weather warning, dam right i would like to see my tent pitch, before stumping up the rest of the payment,is that not my right as a consumer, also as i father and a husband its my job to make sure i feel my family are safe.Camping in a tent is slightly different from camping in a moter home, caravan etc.

Notice a few site owners posting on this thread, would like to know there feelings,on when a tent pitch becomes unfit for purpose, would water coming up over your shoes when walking on pitch count,a 5 foot by 5 foot mud bath left by previous tent count, this is what i found the condition my pitch was in recently.

If i had not decided to have a 'look at my pitch',i would have handed over £75 without any warning of the state of the pitch i had booked. This was after being told by the site 2 hours before arriving everything was fine[i made the phone call].
