So what will it be like traffic wise at the start of Scottish school holidays?. We are journeying down on 30th June ( with a couple of stops, end destination St Ives) and staying for just over two weeks.
Comments in this thread are making me wish we'd picked somewhere else - This is by far the furthest we have ventured with the caravan.
Don't think you will have much problem for the end of June our main holidys which cause most of the problems don't start until mid July.

Agree with Mr Muffin - Cornwall in June and getting to Cornwall in June will be nothing like in the Summer hols (Mid July onwards).
Cornwall once you get there is no busier than any other holiday resort in the UK but because there's only one road in and one road out the main trouble is getting there.
As mentioned many times in this thread - plan your travel very carefully, if you can pick days that are not peak times to drive and you'll be fine. Usually have excellent weather in June!
It seems EVERYONE drives through the night, may be best to drive in the daytime....
If you drive through the night I presume you arrive early morning but most sites don't allow arrivals until after midday so what do people do for the few hours?
Driving through the night both GOING and RETURNING (leave mid-evening on Friday - that way you're well out of Cornwall before the morning rush) is definitely the best option. We've done it for over 25 years, as we are more than 400 miles from our favourite destinations (Mevagissey, St. Ives etc.) Because of the distance, plus a couple of 1 or 2 hour snoozes in laybys or service centres on the way down, we've not had a problem in arriving too early at the sites. Mind you, next year, SWMBO retires from the local Education Authority so we can holiday when we want - for as long as we want!
------------- June - Old Brick Kilns, Fakenham
June - Long Acres, Boston Lincs.

We live in Devon, about 15 minute drive from Torbay. i cant honestly say that our area is hideously busy int he summer. Of course avoid driving on Saturdays as the M5/A38/a30 are horribly busy. How about not going down to cornwall and stopping in Devon. This is such a beautiful county with so much to offer and it is a shame that so many bypass it completely and rush further west. I am as big a cornwall fan as anyone but it is very busy in August. One area that we have visited in high season is The Lizard peninsular, this seems less hectic than some of the larger resorts. Wherever you end up, enjoy.
Hopefully if word gets out you will all stay away and leave it for the rest of us. . Cornwall is absolutely beautiful, and so dependant on tourist pounds please think twice before spending them in France instead. We have never really had a problem except once at St Ives, but that is a v. popular spot, there are plenty of quiet nooks for everyone to enjoy.

We just parked up in the waiting area on site and waited till we could get on the pitch. We had paid for the night before as well so we could just pich up as soon as people on site were up and about.
Ahh, I said to Ian maybe people paid for the previous night but he thought a lot of sites would only allow sat-sat bookings in high season or not allow early arrivals because of units passing on narrow lanes.
We travel from Hull and can honestly say we have not encountered major traffic on any of our journeys to the south west.
August 2007 - left Hull at 1.30 on the Saturday afternoon - had advised the people in Bude that we would be late. On our way down the M5 I actually wondered if our car was running down some deserted lane cos I can hand on heart state that we encountered a stretch of motorway without any vehicles on our side of the carriageway. We finally landed at Sandymouth before 7.00pm and that time included 2 pitstops.
Aug 2008 - left early Saturday morning(3.30) and was down to Wooda by 11.00 - that run surprised my Mum who thought going down there would take ages.
July 2009 - Trevornick,Holywell - a very pleasant 7.00am start to arrive at approx 2.00pm
July 2011 - Woolacombe Bay - Golden Coast - again no major traffic approx 4.00am - 11.00am run. OH followed the satnav going down little lanes - not my idea of fun but OH & DS thought it was funny.
My thoughts are "I am holiday and if it takes a while - SO!!"
Enjoy what ever you decide and OH says dare you to try the little roads that Satnav wants you to go down!
We will be returning back to Heligan Gardens this summer as we love Mevagissey and its about the closest I can get without staying on a commercialised site. It is a sister site to Pentewan Sands which is a much larger site with swimming pool bar etc.. Heligan Gardens on the other hand is smaller, very pretty with distant sea view from some parts and has excellent facilities.
We drive there from Cambridgeshire and last time we left at 2am, drove through the night and stopped just outside St Austell for a snooze ready to pull onto site at the right time.
Yes Cornwall is busy which I think is great as it shows british tourism is still alive and well and there are so many places to visit
