Maybe it was the campsite owner who knows. I still don't see it as being greedy.

All other sites tried were full. The op felt it was unfair to be charged for a night they were not there and did not stay.

Someone else may have stayed who knows. The campsite can charge whatever they like you either accept the cost or you don't.

It's probably fair to say the site shot itself in the foot by talking about a night already gone - if that's how it was presented. There's no doubt if would have been sensible to present it as "3 nights for £80" - if their system allowed that, and/or they had the wit.

That said, their site, their offer. Our money, our choice.

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it

I've just re read this thread and am struggling to understand how some folk think it is acceptable to charge for a day ' IN  THE   PAST '

yes its a 4 day minimum booking, but the OP said he did not think it was fair to charge for a day in the past , the OP never mentioned that it was expensive, just that he/she was being asked for a day thats been and gone.Surely the idiot on the phone could have struck a deal and knocked a day off....small minded greedy campsite owners in for a quick buck nothing else ......

wasn't you was it mcguire6078

Reading through this thread I have enjoyed reading the opinions of all others...

If the campsite has said they are charging you for a days camping that you were not there for, then this would in fact be bang out of order, however if there is a set fee for the long weekend break then there really is only 2 decisions to make...

Stay Or Don't stay! in this case you chose the latter which to be honest would be my choice also!

I like sites to be flexible, I enjoy sites that can cater for your requirements and if its a one night stay and there is availability then why not allow it?! it is an empty space and for them its more money for them. The argument that someone could turn up is the same as saying someone might not turn up!

I have a nicely filling up black book of sites I will never return to, mainly down to the petty rules and attitudes of such sites. My decision, my money, My way!

Interesting thread. Not sure which view I agree with. Wondering how I would feel if I had booked this site in advance, Paid for 4 days when only able to stay for 3 then found myself pitched next to someone who booked at last minute and wasn't having to pay full 4 days??

Campsites charge for a minimum number of nights during peak periods for very good reason. If they allow you to book just for one or two nights on a bank holiday they are possibly depriving themselves of more money for that pitch because it's likely they will then have to refuse someone who wants that pitch for three or four nights. That makes perfect sense.

However, if the day has already gone and it is therefore impossible to let that pitch on that day to someone else, then they should not charge for it as you are not depriving them of additional income for it.

The fair thing would be to charge for three days use, not four in this instance. This is shameful in my opinion and I'd like to know which site it is so I can avoid it.

I’m still struggling to see why this is an issue.

If you keep putting the point that "they are trying to charge me for a day in the past" you could be missing out on a fantastic site with great facilities. In fact it could be one of the best sites in the area. It’s really cheap just £8.00 night with electric hook up. The only issue is they operate a minimum booking fee over bank holidays – you can stay less days but will need to pay the full fee (4 days x £8.00 = £32) mainly because they are so busy and don’t normally have vacancies

Would you stay...I know I would even if they did charge a day I was not there – because it’s cheap, has availability over the bank holiday, everywhere else I’ve tried is full and I want to go away. Oh and it’s within my budget which I had of £15 night for 3 nights.

Stuff principles the bottom line is can I afford it, is it a nice site and is it available when I want to go.... as long as it fits that criteria I’m staying.

However there are others who feel annoyed that they want to charge me an additional £8.00 for a night I’m not there not only that it was yesterday. So won't stay

Your money your choice....

Yet another spin on the hypotheses of would you wouldn’t you...

Bank holiday weekend and you suddenly decided you want to go away. All the sites you are trying appear to be full. However you find two sites with availability:

SITE A
Cheap has great reviews but has a minimum booking policy of 4 days over bank holiday period – regardless your length of stay which means you will be charged for the day you were not even there (yesterday)
£8:00 night x 4    Total    £32

SITE B
The second site has poor reviews and is more expensive but will only charge a nightly fee:
£15.00 night x 3    Total    £45

Where would you stay....? Or just not bother....?

This is a new one on me.

OH decided to take his youngest camping this weekend, just the two of them in a small tent.

they couldnt reaqlisticly set off til this morning (sat) and planned to spend two nights, as soon as he got up he strted ringing round.

most sites were full, he eventually found a site with a free pitch who said that as its a BH weekend he would have to pay for fri, sat, sun and mon night!!!!

Yes, thats right! They wanted him to pay for last night, a night in the past, when he was at home snoring in bed!!!!

When he pointed out that he didn't think he should have to pay for a night in the past, the owner said "well I could sell the pitch to someone else for that night" - No you couldn't! It's in the past!!!!

Needless to say, OH didn't take him up on his 'offer'!

maybe it was sat, sun, mon, tues Tuesday was a bank holiday too
