My dogs are very stealth like, you would never actually see them doing it, they are trained that way.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!

Ahhhh, But I can sniff out a urinating dog at 30 feet in my sleep, and stop it mid flow with just a stare! 😖😖

IDDSO WROTE.
People in this thread are seemingly justifying their dogs aggression and suggesting if a child was in the wrong place at the wrong time, resulting in serious injury because the dog was tethered / wasn't tethered / interpreted it as...blah de blah. One has to wonder if it'd be better - and certainly safer - to leave such a dog at home, with other family members or in kennels?

No not really.
I have never said anything about my dogs aggression in any post.
In fact he does not show that much anyway.
But same goes for any Adult as well.
Blah Blah Blah

Looking at your reviews thank God you go abroard alot, saves locking you up.

Sorry Ray, I thought you wrote this? Your choice of words does imply you think him capable of aggression under certain circumstances (I.e.tethered)? 8 stones of potentially 'rip your head off' dog would be a bit of a worry, for some campers.

As per my previous post, I'm not sure a campsite is the best place for any dog, of any size or breed, if they're known to be potentially aggressive / dangerous. Clearly you disagree. And who's going to admit their dog is potentially dangerous?

I suppose the banned breeds list (more applicable in France than here, where you've quite rightly identified as where we prefer to camp), takes into account muscle-dog breeds who could potentially do more damage.

Point was, on a chain a dog can turn into a guard dog.
And i do not want a guard dog in my caravan, or on my pitch thank you.

It how all dogs are wired up.

They start to protect if tied up and thats a fact,
I do not think we will agree anyway, my dog is part of the family and will always go with us.

We have a killer King Charles..
Its a great guard dog.
It licks every one to death, and goes on every trip with us.
That was one of the reasons we have a caravan.
Regarding dog friendly sites - we would only go on those that insist they are kept on a lead.

It's been interesting to read these posts. I'm going camping for the first time in 20 years within the next month. The whole time I've been planning it, buying a tent, etc, I've always factored in taking my lurcher with me.

I'm planning to do my camping within school terms, during the week when the campsites should hopefully be quieter. I want him with me for a few reasons. I'm camping solo, and he does make me feel more secure, he's toasty warm at night when it gets cold, he's a reason to get up and go for a nice long walk, and he gives me a good excuse to be anti-social.

After reading a lot about camping with dogs on these forums, I've bought two tethers, and I'll string them together and thread his lead onto them. I'm planning on putting up a tarp, as I've just got a 3 person pop up, to shelter from the rain. And I've just bought a dog tent for the daytime so he doesn't get too much muck in the tent.

He will be on the lead or tether at all times, not just because of other people, but because I don't want him running off and getting run over! He means far too much to me to take that risk. He can also be quite nervy/aggressive with some dogs, due to being mauled by two dogs last year.

I agree that people should keep better control of their children. We used to have deerhounds (big dogs, about hip high), who were very friendly and laid back. Even so, I hated people assuming their children could just come up and fuss and/or grab them. If they were startled, they could have done a lot of damage just by falling on the child. As for when other people told me their dogs were friendly? So were mine, but they also weighed nearly 8 stone each, and can hit nearly 30mph. Not good.

To be honest, I think some of the littler dogs are more aggressive, it's just under reported as their bites aren't quite as debilitating as those of bigger dogs. You often find owners that don't bother training them as they don't think they can be dangerous. Behaviour that is seen as 'cute' in a chihuahua is 'dangerous' in a rottweiler.

You're not long in UKCS, Gwynapnudd. Welcome.
Some of the posts in this thread have been more aggressive than the dogs we've been discussing. Your post is not, and thank you for bringing us back to the topic.
Enjoy your camping & your toasty warm lurcher. With a rescue cocker that will go hunting if she's not tied to the MH, I sympathise with your wish to keep your dog safe.

Had a lovely 5 days in Becks Bay. Buddy loved it too. I took a Khyam K9 for him to chill out in during the day, but I ended up using it for storage, as he preferred my bed!

Tethered him as planned, and he was as good as gold (after the initial "where the hell am I?" reaction).
He did try and have a sniff and a stand off with the bloodhound mix next door, but they both quickly settled down when they found they couldn't get near each other.

Did have one couple pitch up next to me with a young chocolate lab. I did mention that Buddy was somewhat anti-social, especially with nosy pups, but the bleeding male owner just didn't seem to get it. If I'm going past another dog, I shorten the lead and try and give them a wide berth, this guy just let his dog fly around like a kite on the end of the lead. EVERY time he walked past, the lab would stick his nose round the corner of my windbreak, and every time my lurcher would fly off the bed to woof at him. I felt the same way about the owner, honestly. I don't mind people most of the time, but this guy did not take a hint and bugger off. Insisted on standing there with his dog, telling me all about the area (my gran lived the next site down), when the roads were closing for Ironman (2 days AFTER he said). Frankly, I felt like barking at him!

Other dogs n site though? No problem at all. I think the owner influences the dog a lot of the time.

Oh that made me laugh! We have a rescue dog that doesn't like other dogs sniffing too close (she was maybe puppy farmed). The number of times I've said that to some smiling owner who doesn't "get it", who thinks other dog owners will love his dog.

Gwynapnudd, welcome and thanks for posting about Becks Bay. I'd never heard of it, but if I make it down to the Tenby area again that'll be where I'll stay - what a lovely site! I'm all for rustic and upcycling, so the facilities will be fine. Farm shop and cafe a field away is a great bonus. (Fine dog, too!)

Hi, I did a review of Becks Bay a couple of days ago (finally), it's up now. A was a lovely camp, a bit rustic and basic, if you like electricity, wi-fi and toilet blocks you could eat your dinner in, but very nice. Quite a few other dogs there, and just a field away from the Pembrokeshire coastal path. Apparently next year they will have 4 toilets and an extra shower. You can cross the road and walk through the field to the farm shop. They have benches outside if you'd like to take the four legged family.
A lot of the shops, like saltrock, and Denby market allow dogs, so does Feccis fish and chip shop, and the Lydstep Tavern.

The only downside of taking Buddy is that he took up most of my boot. I have a piece of foam cut to fit my boot as a bed for him, and I got some collapsible items under that, but the rest of my car was packed! On the other hand, I know now what I don't need to take, as well as things I should have taken, but didn't. The tether I bought was excellent. I went for the more expensive version, that I can't remember the name of, but it has a no tangle cable, with a straight spike with fins that you pushed into the ground. The people next door had a screw in tether, which kept working loose, but at the end of the week I had to work mine out with a mallet/peg puller. Just have to teach the dog how not to tangle himself up in the guy ropes!

It would be as well for all dog owners to take a look at the recent legislation regarding the law on dogs. If your dog frightens somebody, even just by barking at them, you 'could' find yourself in court for having a dangerous dog even in your own private garden. I would suggest a campsite is a private place but one to which the public have access and therefore dogs should be kept under proper control at all times.

The Law on Dogs (PDF file)

Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 (section 3)
It is a criminal offence (for the owner and/or the person in
charge of the dog) to allow a dog to be ‘dangerously out of
control’. A ‘dangerously out of control’ dog can be defined
as a dog that has injured someone or a dog that a person
has grounds for reasonable apprehension that it may do
so. Something as simple as your dog chasing, barking at or
jumping up at a person or child could lead to a complaint, so
ensure that your dog is under control at all times.
If your dog injures a person, it may be seized by the police and
your penalty may include a prison sentence and/or a ban on
keeping dogs. There is also an automatic presumption that
your dog will be destroyed (unless you can persuade the court
that it is not a danger to the public, in which case it may be
subject to a control order). You may also have to pay a fine,
compensation and costs.

Unfortunately this piece of legislation is flawed, because its very subjective as its down to a person's feeling, opinion and definition.

Unfortunately some parents do not teach their kids how to treat or behave around dogs.   This causes a lot of problems unfortunately, even respect peoples pitch. Nothing worse than a kid playing football which keeps going onto your pitch and or hitting the tent running past deliberate annoying your dog to upset it.
They won't listen when you tell them to leave the dog alone and not to pester.

Toddlers young kids make pitch sound which adults can't hear but dogs can, combined with running past, very quick movement is a trigger for dogs behaviour.   This is why young children need to be taught like in the old days, not to run around dogs, don't make sudden screeching notices. And ask permissions if they can stroke the dog.

Respect works both ways

Toddlers young kids make pitch sound which adults can't hear but dogs can,

are we talking about human toddlers or bat toddlers here?

voice pitch. (hertz or cycles per second)

A typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency of from 85 to 155 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz. Children and babies have even higher fundamental frequencies. Infants show a range of 250 to 650 Hz, and in some cases go over 1000 Hz.

compared with hearing range (hertz or cycles per second)

A person who has hearing within the normal range can hear sounds that have frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The most important sounds we hear every day are in the 250 to 6,000 Hz range

so thats about 19,000 cycles short of our top pitch ability and falls at the lower end of our hearing....
