I still think prices are reasonable. If a site is too expensive for your needs then don't go. Camping for me is all about taking my grandchildren back to the days when you could have fun without sitting in front of a TV or computer, getting fresh air in their lungs and inventing games to play, and there are not many places that would accept your beloved dog/s, and i really like to have my own possesion's when on holiday, no worries about kiddies breaking things in hotel's ect. As has been said campsite owners have to make a living too.

I feel that prices have really gone up over the past 3 years. We don't want to pay over £20 per night to camp in the summer hols with our family of 4 in a tent. My advice would be to stay out of Southern England.
You just have to spend time on the research to find reasonable sites. If I wanted a pool and clubhouse then I would accept that I had to pay more.
We got to Haven every Easter on the Sun newspaper deal and that is really cheap! In fact you can go to a basic caravan park for about £12 per person for a 3 - 4 night break. That works out a lot cheaper than taking a tent in the summer.
But we love camping and go every summer. I think this website is doing a great job at sharing the few reasonably priced campsites that are left. If we all refuse to pay £30 per night - they wouldn't be able to charge it!
At £30 a night, reduce by 20% vat so the site is in fact getting £24 a night for the pitch.
Cost to campsites are just getting more an more, just had heating oil delivered that heats the shower block, 60% increase on the last delivery :o( rates have also risen sharply this year, campsite owners are not making the huge profits that some people seem to think they are.

Err... £30 incl. VAT is £25 ex. VAT, not £24.
Totally agree about the costs going up much greater that the official inflation rate though.
Yes I know prices have increased over the years but I still find it a lot cheaper than going abroad or staying in self catering accommodation in the UK.
This year we thought about staying self catering in Scotland rather than do the 6 hour drive with the caravan. However, after seeing the prices for a one week stay, its going to be cheaper to take the caravan. Yes its a longer drive and more costly on fuel but even so its still a fraction of the cost of staying self catering - we could stay three times longer.

We used self-catering cottages for many years and came back to camping (after 30 years) in 2009 mainly for reasons of cost.
We now have five or six holidays a year instead of one and enjoy every minute.
We are lucky in that we are both retired so can go outside high season and tend to avoid bank holidays. We mostly use C&CC sites so get even better value with Age Concession rates and free nights.

We are holding our prices here at The Orchard Camp Site (UKCS ref 2366) for all bookings made before March 1st 2011 when there will be a price rise.
Just email your booking - we confirm and ask for a deposit - and you pay the balance upon arrival. At last years prices!
So if you are quick you can still get your camping at The Orchard Campsite (Award Winning) for £15 per night - all in - gazebos, cars, visitors, dogs, awnings, showers, hot water, WiFi, all included - for the rest of this year - but you must book before March 1st.
I don't want to start a huge row, but I wondered if the campsite owners on here can explain how it is practical to charge one person in a tent the same price as four in a tent? I'm referring to basic pitches.
I can understand that the single is occupying a pitch. However, one person uses the facilities (loos, showers, hot water) less than four people. Surely, a pitch fee plus per person fee would be more profitable?
I accept that even the £15 I was charged per night I was charged at one place last year is considerably cheaper than I could get in a B&B as a single but it did irk me that the four adults on the next pitch were paying the same.
I wouldn't have considered booking at this price and only paid it because of an emergency that arose that meant I had no choice.
ficklejade - i think you will find that this will vary from site to site. We give a discount to solo campers but likewise make extra charges if there are more than 2 on a pitch. A lot of sites do similar but as you say there are many sites that will charge per pitch regardless of how many people or for a set number of people.

Must admit that that bugs me too, but I can see the logic behind it. After all, we are taking up a pitch that could be let to 4 people so, if charged separately, we are losing the campsite money. If sites charged per person, us solo campers could find it hard to book a site in advance - we'd be left looking for late availability
on the other side of the coin, we won't visit a site that charges per person cos it works out too expensive for us as family of six.
Site can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but never ALL of the people ALL of the time.

Better get you flagged up then for when I eventually get down to see the family in Somerset! You're one of the few that give discounts to solos.
