But what time do people have to vacate their pitch? If the site is full, then surely you have to wait?

We were once 'chased' off our pitch at 10.00am at a site in France on the Sat of a public holiday weekend, by a French motorhome who had been allocated our pitch. Although the family didn't say anything, I could tell they thought we were at fault even though the leaving time was 12 noon. Many units had arrived early, and were hanging around blocking the roads waiting for their pitches.

That is the point Franbee. As I said earlier, if everyone stuck to the C&CC site rules of leave by 12:00 and don't arrive before 1pm, there should be no problems with either conflict between leavers and arrivers, or with pitches still being quite legitimately occupied. Sadly there are some who don't think this rule applies to them. As in all walks of life these days.

As far as I am aware, most of the campsites I have ever been on have a departure time of about 11.00am and an arrival time of after 12.00 noon. It seems to work ok.

A campsite I booked a couple of weeks ago showed an arrival time of 3.00pm on their website but when I queried it I was told any time after midday.

The trouble with late arrival times, if you are only camping for two nights, is that by the time you have arrived and set up camp (in my case that takes about two hours or more) most of the first day has disappeared and in the winter you could find it's dark by the time you have set up camp.

I try to arrive at campsites between noon and 1.00pm. By the time I have booked in and set up camp it is around 3.00pm and I still have time to go out and explore the area that day and the whole of the next day as well. If the first day has been used up just by arriving and setting up camp I would feel cheated

Yes I can certainly see your point, Bob61. I think that as long as there is a clear hour between the "leave-by" time, and the "don't arrive before" time, there should be no problem. I simply quoted the C&CC rules.

The opposite point to the one you make however, is that some people might not want to get up at the crack of dawn to be away as early as 10am.

With us it tends to depend on how far we are travelling. If we have a long drive ahead of us we tend to leave for home earlier, but if we only have say an hour's drive, we tend to stay as long as possible. Provided they are not too booked up with incomers, the C&CC will usually let you leave much later than 12:00, so you can enjoy most of the last day before leaving. We tend to avoid peak times anyway.

Colin

We're no longer members of the C&CC, just the CAMC now. Some of their sites also have a 1pm arrival time and a 12 noon departure time. Others are 12 noon arrivals, but some people arrive well before that. Whilst we may argue for and against it, it's what the CAMC have decided and put in place. I think part of the problem is that on some sites people are allowed on well before 12 (I've seen new arrivals at Moreton-in-Marsh at 10.30am) yet when we were 10 minutes early (had a good journey and no hold-ups) and arrived at 11.50 at Wharfedale we were told in no uncertain terms that we couldn't get on the site before 12. Fair enough, we were early, but there were others waiting already. There should be consistency in applying the rule IMHO, it's no good having this rule and some wardens letting people on 1.5hrs early yet others refusing entry if arriving 10 minutes early.

Quite often these days, and especially in the summer, I pack up and go home the evening before. My reasoning is that I can't see the point in spending another night in a tent just to get up at the crack of dawn, as you say, and pack away a tent that may be damp with dew. However, I am mostly up by about 8.00am when camping anyway so if I don't bother with a cooked breakfast I can usually get packed away by 10.00am if I stay that last night.

It seems to work for me and having paid for two nights if I can arrive by 1.00pm, spend time that day exploring the area and then most of the following day before packing up and going home I feel I have had my money's worth.

I am getting wise just lately though and have realised that some campsites will allow you to stay late (sometimes up to 5.00pm) for a small extra charge, so I pay for one night and an extension which works out cheaper than paying for two full nights.

Your last paragraph sounds like a good move to me, Bob!

Being retired, if we go for just a short break we tend to go mid-week. Often, if there are few coming in on the day we plan to leave, we have been told just leave when you are ready, and haven't been charged any extra.

I think we have only been asked/encouraged to leave on time (noon) once.
We tend to get the "Take as long as you like, we're not busy" approach.
Unfortunately, I'm the sort that likes to get home as quick as possible, get the tent wash dried and ironed, and the bikes washed, and all put away, preferably before dark, so I don't think we've ever taken advantage of such generous hosts, and tend to get away around lunchtime anyway!
