On another holiday, we watched two vans pitch up next to each other. Clearly friends as they all got out and shook hands and hugged. The van nearest to us had a middle aged couple in. The hubby got out after reversing onto the pitch and unhooked. He levelled and put down the steadies. The wife got out of the car and went into the van. He then does the usual, gas, water, attach waste etc, then gets out the ground sheet. At this the couple from the other van walk round with chairs and wine & glasses. The wife comes out of the van in a different outfit to the one she was wearing when she arrived, speaks to her husband who fetches her a chair from the van. Opens it and puts it next to the other couple. She sits. Hubby gets out the awning, once he has started to thread the awning onto the rail, he fetches the caravan step to stand on, we see him struggling at the highest point, he goes to the front locker and his wife pushes the awning back takes the step to the caravan door and goes inside. Hubby comes back, looking at awning and step, words may have been exchanged, then he sets to again. He gets the awning on fully. Then he starts putting up the poles, all the time being watched by the other three people. He gets the awning up, side panels on, pegs it down. Empties the car, and eventually gets to sit. At no time did anyone help him. He looked knackered.

And you didn’t go over & offer to help? That might have shamed some of them into lending a hand.

We were recently on a site when on Friday evening about 8.30pm a large twin axle caravan pulls up next to us. We moved our car from the side of our caravan to make it easier for them to set up.
They then proceeded to put up a full length large air awning. Next came a large air wind break which they started to put next to the awning (about 3ft from our caravan). We were not happy so nicely told them they were too close, to which the woman replied, but we have the space up to your hard standing - er no you don’t. Fortunately he saw sense and moved it to the front of the awning.
They were away from site for much of Saturday.
10am Sunday they were packed up and off site.
I couldn’t be bothered with all that for less than 40 hours.

Janet# you had the 6m fire safety rule on your side. The site manager where I was recently, would have moved a caravan that had set up with its habitation door opening just 3 steps away from our MH, so the occupants coming out of their door passed our window barely a step away. Thankfully they left next morning.

We are over-specced for camping for the 3 of us- 8 man airbeam plus extension plus vango hogan hub (the big one) plus toilet tent, dining table, etc , fancy lighting, sims, and our trailer is an old trailer tent one, so we have a proper kitchen. I'd argue we have all the gear and some idea........but we also have a smaller 5 man for shorter trips and a smaller trailer as lugging all the kit round isnt always necessary, even though sometimes its lots of fun.

I do try to help people set up but let them see how they are getting on first, either so as not to interfere or just for a little smug-but-caring laugh to myself as we've all been through it!
