I must admit I haven't done much looking at prices either last year or this so far. I did look up the prices on the Somerset site last year, just curious as to whether their prices had rocketed as they were very reasonable when I went there, especially considering how good the site was. MUCH cheaper than the nearest C&CC site even without electricity and my seniors discount. It had gone up by £1 a night, and I would highly recommend it. I left a review at the time on here.

Just checked it again and the price for a car, 2 adults and a caravan is £20 a night. For 1 Adult it is £14 a night. That is for a fully serviced pitch on the first two weeks in July, which is when we went. The site is called Stonebridge Farm. I have no connection with the site other than as a very satisfied customer, I live in Hertfordshire.

To me its simple, sites charge what they can get away with their obviously getting customers or they would charge less.

Some are cheap some are mid price and some are downright extortionate, but we have the choice which we support/stay at which has all we require at the price we are willing to pay.

When I go with family and grand kids I have to pay what I consider expensive for the family to be happy, when their not with me any place I can park will do

has anyone seen the price of CAMHC sites this year?

obviously they have a good market this year with many buying caravans and campers because they cannot holiday abroad.

one purpose of joing the CAMHC was to book cheaper sites in the uk at short notice.

the reality is that the CAMHC sites are more expensive than private sites now and some of the private sites have swimming pools etc..

the other problem is that many sites are booked now until 2022. it inevitable that the bookings will not all be fulfilled and availability will be there if you chack on the day before you want to go.

last august i couldnt book more than 6 nights because the site i was looking at showed it was full over the weekend. when the weekend came and i left it was by no means full.

french campsites are cheaper and better equipped than english campsites.

Re not being able to book 6 nights, I had that last year. So I did a dummy / trial online booking for 3 days followed by another 3 days and that worked. We just had to move pitch, not a problem in a MH but I appreciate it’s much more hassle with a caravan. Finally we booked the last night at the office and moved again to a great pitch that hadn’t been available until then & was booked the following night.
As for cost, we’ve never stuck to club sites because they’re like hens teeth in the areas we want to go to.

I quickly learned when I came back to caravanning after a gap of many years, that often campsites are booked up solid at the weekend, then half-empty during the week. As we are retired it really doesn't matter when we start our holidays, so we nearly always tend to start on a Monday. If you try and book on the Friday or Saturday with an automated booking system, it will often come back as "not available", but book to start on the Monday, no problem. Doing this we have often found that we can book a prime pitch for two weeks, when it wasn't available over the previous weekend. If we want a short break we book Monday to Friday, which is probably good for sites too if they are mainly full at weekends.

Surely we have to face the fact that camping is changing and with more and more people demanding/needing/expecting more site facilities, prices will go up. Site operators have to pay each year for rubbish disposal, water and services, plus no doubt insurance, and if people want larger pitches/EHU/hardstanding, etc. they all cost money and, in the case of larger pitches can reduce income.

Probably very true, but I think that there will always be a market for those of us who want not quite bare basics, but only a little more. All I want is a grass pitch, preferably random not all in a row, EHU, toilets, and showers. I don't want noisy entertainment on site, a swimming pool, a bar on site, or anything else, and I certainly wouldn't pay any extra for them. Less is more as they say. A pub with decent food not too far away is nice, but I don't really want it on the site. I enjoy peace and quiet.

Colin, I'm entirely with your requirements but don't need EHU! I also hope there will also be space for those like us. However, I'm increasingly finding prices too expensive as a solo tenter at many sites.

I know what you mean about prices. We have to be very careful with money. There are two of us though, both in our 70s. We can manage without EHU for a night or two, but any longer in warm weather gives us problems. At some point someone has fitted a domestic fridge in our old caravan, so without EHU we can't use it. It's a lovely fridge though so I don't really want to change it as it works perfectly. Can't really afford to anyway.

I now try to find sites with metered electricity if I can, but there aren't many I can find so far. We went on one such site in 2019 though and we realised just what a rip-off EHU prices are! Most sites seem to charge between £3 and £6 a night, but on metered electricity we paid just £2.80 for a whole two week stay! Just fridge and battery charger all the time though, and very occasional use of a small kettle when we couldn't be bothered to put the big gas one on the hob.

Tbf. The days of 10€ sites in France are long gone. Most out of season at ACSI rates are 16-18€. There do seem plenty of inland UK sites around £20-25 with ehu which is realistic. Not large coastal sites though.

All we need is ehu, hardstanding if possible or at least well drained, level pitches. There are still plenty of CLs/CSs for less than £15 per night.
