Agreed, Ewen C.
I camp because I love being in my tent, and as far from built up areas as possible. I want to be outdoors with my campfire in the evening, birdsong in the morning and the gentle (or otherwise) patter of rain on the canvas.
My favourite campsites don’t even allow vehicles in the camping area, you have to use a barrow. And you can barely see other campers for trees or tall meadow grass.
I don’t want to be in a metal box: when / if I get too frail to manage my tent that’s when I will revert to a premier Inn or room in a pub.
I am wincing at some site fees and now use that as a filter to choose sites, whereas in ye goode olde days it wasn’t an issue.
I liked tent camping when I was young and only really switched to a caravan because it was so much more convenient when the kids started to come along. Having all the baby stuff in a tent wasn't fun, but in a caravan it was all out of the way, particularly while travelling.
We live in a very quiet rural area and only have to go out in the garden to enjoy bird-song. We also like the quieter sites away from all the hustle and bustle, especially as there is only the two of us now. If it wasn't for my back problems I'd be just as happy in a tent.
Some site fees are getting ridiculous now though as after all, what we are really paying for is to rent a small patch of grass. We are providing all our own accommodation, doing all our own fetching and carrying, dealing with all our own waste, including the toilet, fetching our own water, and doing all our own cleaning. Site fees should only be a tiny fraction of the cost of even a cheap hotel. There certainly shouldn't be any comparison.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin

Although we started off camping in an old, 2nd hand trailer tent with 3 young children as it was the only way we could afford to go away, in the U.K. and then later on in France, we now, as a retired couple, caravan in the U.K. and abroad for extended periods, as it is our preferred way of holidaying. We are fortunate in that we don’t have a particular budget to stick to for our holidays, but old habits die hard and we always look for the best value for money for where we want to go. We do enjoy occasional breaks away in hotels, but our main holidays are always in our caravan, now by choice rather than budget.
Our main holiday is also always in our caravan, as that is our first choice. However, whereas at one time if we needed a couple of nights away, we would have automatically taken our caravan. Now we consider whether a hotel might be a better bet if there is little difference in the cost. In a hotel everything is done for us. No water to fetch, no toilet to empty, and we don't have to tow, which means a slightly lower fuel consumption. We might even go by train if it's convenient, as that would be free for us. Ultimately, a hotel for a couple of days could work out cheaper than the caravan as well as easier.

Colin

Hi all, I started camping at 4 years old with my mum and Dad and my 5 brothers. My dad had Bedford dormabile which they slept in, us kids slept in an old canvas ridge tent. We did this until I was 15 years old and loved every minute of it even in very very wet holidays. When I grew up and flew the nest still carried on tenting for afew years. Then after getting married, got a job and kids etc I didn't tent again. After 4 marriages and a very eventful life I met my present and hopefully the last wife 20 years now, phew. We decided to buy a caravan 19 years ago. We are now on our 5th van. We love to be away in it. I'm coming upto 70 now so tenting is definitely out of the game. We've always had older vans but our present one is the best although it's 20 years old only £3000,but it's lovely. It's got a nice rear bathroom with a separate shower cubicle, full sized cooker, Central heating, hot water and nice comfy beds. We never use site facilities as we don't need them. Camping was good but caravan is so much better especially at our age. I have thought about a motorhome but we prefer to tow our tin tent to a site, set it up obviously with awning, the argument in a bag we call it. Once set up our car is our own to use. We go shopping and get into car parks with or without height barriers and can drive around small towns and villages with no problem. Horses for courses I suppose. I'm 70 and hopefully will caravan for years to come in our super home from home. We've booked a two week holiday with our van first two weeks in July. First week in the Lakes £16.50 a night including hookup. Then second week in peak district £18 a night including hookup. All good to me.

Just back from France with the caravan, we paid €17 a night with ACSI, on a rural/ coastal site in Brittany, £520 for the ferry though! But as Ewen said, it is about the experience, so money is not an issue, we had an amazing holiday.
My wife and I have traveled the world in our 46 years together, done some amazing things, and seen some amazing things. But as we got older, then COVID, the lure of the Safari, the Outback, big mountains has diminished somewhat. If I am honest, the thought of ploughing through traffic to get to an airport, then the hassle and people, fills us with dread tbh.
We live in an amazing area, a quiet corner of the Dartmoor National Park, 40 mins from stunning beaches, we also have a bit of woodland with a stream and pond some 20 miles away on the edge of open moorland. We tent/ bivvy camp there most weeks, open fire, deer, birds……Awesome. Just off in a bit tbh.
But France is, in our opinion, our favourite. Pyrennes in September, perhaps! We never book anything, not even the ferry until a few days before. Just wing it. 👍
