OK, me and some mates want to go hiking in the lake district, in the summer holidays, and need to know if many campsites allow 3/4 15yr olds, or if we'll have to go to youth hostels.

Thanks

    Hi, James...

First off, welcome to the website... Why don't you or one of your friends join the 'Camping & Caravanning Club' it costs £33 a year (that's £8:25 each, always was good at maths!). You'll have a choice of all the C. & C.C. sites (there's about a hundred of them) and all of the little C.S.s (certificated sites), there are over a thousand of those (all reasonably priced) dotted all over the country... Perhaps you could get one of you parents to do the joining (via internet and bank 'direct debit') then you'd save yourself the £6 joining fee!...

Just the fact that you will have bothered to join a camping organisation, will help to show that you are responsible. Then so long as you all behave yourselves (which I'm sure you would) you'll always be welcomed back... Good luck, I hope you find some sites who'll take you. I used to love camping with my mates, when I was your age, It's seems a pity that some site owners aren't willing to trust a party of young lads camping these days...

P.S. I don't know what area you're from, but 'The Orchard' campsite at Wickham Market in Suffolk, welcomes responsible parties of young campers... You can find details of the site by going to the "Campsite Search" facility above and looking under Suffolk...

Hi James

I remember last year there was a guy round about your age looking for a campsite for him and some friends and as far as I remember, he couldn't get anywhere to take them because of their age.  Good luck though and I hope you find somewhere.

I know not all groups of 15 year old lads are the same, but i think some sites have the tendancy to not allow them on due to the fact after a few too many shandys they'll become loud etc !!

Good luck in your quest though.

becks.

I think you have to be at least 16 to be allowed on a campsite without a supervising adult, and most campsites require one of you be 18 in order to take legal responsibility for the others in the event of damage or an emergency. Plus many campsites don`t like single sex groups.

However, there`s no harm in ringing a few campsites along your route and asking. If you go for the more basic, non commercial type ones and stress that you`re a walking group you never know. If you join the C&CC then you`ll get the big UK sites directory as part of your membership. And if an owner says no, ask if there`s anyone nearby that takes younger groups.

I suspect though that most site owners won`t want the responsibility of a group of what are basically unsupervised children in the eyes of the law, no offence meant.

Might be worth contacting Lake District Tourist Information - think there's one in Ambleside. Also worth considering BTCV (British Trust Conservation Volunteers). They do working/conservation/holidays. I went on one to the I.O.W when I was about your age (poss a bit older). About 20 of us slept on a church floor and had to muck in with the cooking etc.   It was the best holiday I've ever had and made some great friends. Saw gloworms for the first time and saw parts of the I.O.W I doubt I could ever find again.   I'm sure BTCV holidays in the Lake District would be just as great.

I've just looked up BTCV and looks like you have to be 16 for these holidays. None during school holidays for this year in Lake District anyway. Might be worth considering for next year - definitely recommended.

The Camping & Caravanning Club has a special Youth Section.  Members who pass their Youth Camping test are allowed to camp on Club operated sites without adult supervision from the age of 14.  I have no idea what the test involves, but why not find out?  Phone the C & CC membership section on 0845 130 7631.

We know how to camp, survival stuff, fire safety etc so why shouldn't we go?

Also camping with parents is boring, we cant do what / go where we want, and we wouldn't do as much stuff by ourselves.

I began camping with friends of the same age at 14 years old. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and started to learn how to live independently of our parents and it's been something I've enjoyed ever since. Camping can be a brilliant education in lots of different ways...

Have you managed to find anywhere yet James?... If not keep trying and have a great time with your mates this summer!...
