The C&CC site (they take non members too, just get the number off the camping and caravan website) in cardigan bay is gorgeous, also can recommend the capsite in Raglan (Usk valley- near us but beautiful area).

I wanted a sandy beach on Cardigan Bay.  I got loads of recommendations but when I went to check them out, a lot of them turned out to be sandy only when the tide was out!  Anywhere above the tide line was a stony beach.  Now that just doesn't qualify in my opinion.

The stones run out at Dyffryn Ardudwy.  After that there is I think about 5 miles of total sand.  It's one of the most glorious stretches of beach I know.  It's clean, no dangerous river currents to worry about and never crowded even on the hottest, sunniest days because a lot of the adjacent land is Ministry of Defence land - just over the sand dunes there is a defunct airbase.  I have camped at Dyffryn Seaside Estate to the south of the airbase (just where the stony bit stops) and Shell Island to the north of it.  I'd recommend both in their own way - we prefer Shell Island now but frankly, if you don't like using portaloos and don't have your own chemical toilet then go to Dyffryn Seaside Estate.  You can always check out Shell Island on a day trip from there.  The RAF jets still fly (training I suppose) all along the Cardigan Bay coast from about 10am till 2pm on weekdays - my kids love spotting them - they disturb the peace a bit but less than when the base was open and they used it to practice take-offs and landings.

I'm thinking of booking the Fforest Fields campsite in Powys. It looks lovely and has lots of good reviews. Does anyone know if they allow barbeques or fires?

Hi Jamanda,

BBQ's are allowed and breeze blocks are provided to keep your BBQ off the ground. As for allowing fires' I know that when the paragliders stay they have had fires in an old lorry wheel, and I have seen people have fires in the sports field but I would ask Katie or George before going to put your mind at rest. We are going there next weekend which is our first camping trip of the year and can't wait.

There are loads of sites at Porthmadog or how about Abersoch - you can't get better beaches really - anywhere along the Lleyn peninsula is Cardigan Bay - you could go further down to Barmouth - depends how far you want to travel but Fforest fields and Usk are nowhere near there!
