Any suggestions for dog friendly sites in Yorkshire or surrounding areas? We have not camped since acquiring two rescue dogs last year, but if we are to holiday at all now, it will be camping holidays I reckon. The only thing is that both dogs get a bit uptight still if other dogs are close by ( due to their being rescue dogs I think), so I think for our first attempt we need a dog friendly site that is fairly quiet where we won't encounter a whole load of other dogs! I know it probably sounds silly, but if the dogs are on edge because of other dogs around, then I won't relax either, which means it won't be much of a holiday! I have bought metal stakes to secure the dogs, but not tried them out yet! Any suggested sites, or tips on how to introduce your dogs to camping would be appreciated. My youngest and I did sleep in the caravan with the two dogs last night (just in the back garden) so at least I think we may be able to sleep OK.. it's just managing their reactions by day that I'm unsure about! Many thanks for reading, and any suggestions will be gratefully received.

This is a lovely site. Very dog friendly with lots of walks straight off the site. Not a big site so wont be too many dogs. Stunning views all around for everyone due to the terracing, good facilities too. Well spaced pitches so your neighbours dogs, if the have any, wont be too close. You could try a windbreak between you and your neighbours if they have a dog. My dog is not very sociable when it comes to other dogs, he was attacked and badly mauled and bitten when he was younger but he is very well behaved on a camp site. He loves to sit outside our tent and watch the world go by. The majority of campers obay the rules and keep their dogs tethered or on a lead. Only once have we been bothered by an untethered dog and that turned out to be the site owners!!! You can only take them and see how they get on. Try a short weekend to start. They may surprise you. Alfie certainly surprised use. Hes a bit vocal and has the usual terrier stubborn streak, only does what we want when he wants to sort of thing, but he loves camping so much and when he is on site you would think he was up for the best dog award. Pick a small quiet site like Howgill and give them a go. They will just love you for it. Alfie goes bananas when he sees the camping gear coming out. Good luck with them.

thanks, Carol - I am raring to give it a try! I can't see which camp site it is that you recommend though - please would you mind posting again to tell me? Thanks so much.
I love the photo of your Alfie, and am so pleased to hear he has taken to camping so well! Hope mine do too
Thanks, forgetmenot.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3033 I'm guessing she meant this one by the later reference to Howgill.  Easy to forget those links!

WE caravan with two rescue dogs and they love it. they have their people with them all of the time and get lots of fuss and fish n chips.

they are not as territiorial with the caravan as they are at home and when we put them out on the stakes we do it on the side away for the busiest part of the site - making sure they have shade and sun of course.

we dont leave them in the van, which does limit where we can go as we cant go into a lot of places (eg museums etc) unless someone volunteers to sit outside!!

the only problem we had was one dog wouldnt eat the first night away, but she has settled and is fine now. we are going to have to make a ramp for our older one as she finds the caravan step hard.

we like to dog lots of walking - then they are tired out and sleep well - although they still want to get up before 7am!

have fun and relax - and they will too

Well we tried it and it was great! Thanks so much for the suggestion. When we booked in, I thought we were going to be allocated a terrace to ourselves since I explained the situation and was told things were quiet. However when we got there we were sharing a terrace with 2 more dogs - but we were fine. Thanks for all your suggestions. Now I just need to get our younger dog over his other phobias around bumble bees and people playing ball /badminton!!! I'm really looking forward to trying again now, and hope we find some more sites as good as that one. Thanks again, I shall now go do a positive review on that lovely site.

Whoops - sorry - I should have said we went to Howgill, as recommended. It is one the loveliest campsites we have stayed on, and was just right. We will go again. I hope to find some more campsites that work well with our dogs too. A tall order but anyone know one within Yorkshire or surrounds which also has horse-riding/trekking nearby - not for the dogs(!), but as a a treat for my daughters?

Glad you enjoyed it forgetmenot. It is a lovely site. The views are stunning. We are going there Whit week for 6 nights and looking forward to it.
