We are hoping to catch a weekend camping in our tent shortly and fancy a short(ish) trip to a nice site somewhere along the scottish border.

We would appreciate advice on any sites that you may have been to that you may suit our requirements.

Somewhere not too remote, within walking (or a short drive) to a town, and picturesque. -- I know I am asking a lot but if anyone knows such a place, then you lot will !!

I have tried the camp site search engine and read most of the available reviews but I still think that this is the best option. 

Springwood  Estate at Kelso is in a woodland setting by the River Tweed and only a short walk from the town centre.  The website says no tents but I think they do sometimes accept them.

There are a couple of sites in Dumfries & Galloway that I use, Park of Brandedleys in Crocketford and Brighouse Bay near Kircudbright, that I would recommend. Both have good facilities on site, are clean and well run. P of B is within walking distance of the village and BB is a 5 minute drive to town. BB also has a shop on site.

We went to brighouse bay for our honeymoon 6 yrs ago, weren't gonna have a honeymoon cos had no money but mum and dad gave us it as a surprise wedding pressie (stayed in a static as it was october!) and we loved it, have been back a few times since, most recent last august for a long weekend but again we stayed in a static.  Will definately be going here again now we have our tent.  The people are so nice and friendly, there is loads of space and the beach is right next to you.

its a family run site and nothing ids too much trouble. you are three miles away from Gretna and a the outlet shopping village.

I would second Springwood park at Kelso and also the caravan and camping club one at Jedburgh. Both of these are walking difference to town.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations. I have looked at most of the websites of the sites you have mentioned and they all look pretty good. I guess now it is a case of write them down on a piece of paper, fold it into squares, throw the squares on the table and pick one that way !

(come to think of it, that isn't a bad way of choosing one anyhow !!)

Moffat is a lovely place and handy for getting to other places, we went to Gretna, Carlisle and Dumfries when we were there.

The C&CC site is next to Hammerlands which is a garden centre, fishing lake, animal park and cafe. They give discount vouchers for the cafe and they do a good breakfast !  We're going back there in May for a long weekend !
