We're off to River Dart Adventures for the week commencing 28 May.  We've been there before and it's excellent fun - if the weather is good!  The long term forecast for that area of the country is rain for the whole week.  Although the kids will probably be happy enough in the lake getting wet, the prospect of sitting by the side of the lake in the rain doesn't fill me with excitement!

Any ideas/recommendations of things we can do in the area on days when the weather doesn't allow us to enjoy the onsite facilities would be appreciated.

Any recommendations of good places to eat out would also be appreciated.

Hiya Lindsey

Take a look at the BBC weather link below.  You might be lucky?!
It says getting drier & warmer from w/c 28/5/07 !!!

We're away then too but heading North to bonny Scotland - I bet the South West will be nice as we're leaving it behind?!

Yep you can easily get to Plymouth from there down the A38 where the National Marine Aquarium is situated at the Barbican.  Fantastic place, I could sit and watch the fish there for hours, and often do!  As you come back towards the A38 by I think it is Sainsburys, there is a Beefeater restaurant next to a travelodge.  They have an off peak menu during the week that is very cheap, £7.95 for two courses, £5.95 for a single course if I remember correctly.

Kents Caverns in Torquay do a guided tour of the caves which we did last week and thoroughly enjoyed.  Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts the latter of which is in Torquay harbour are also excellent places to visit, weather permitting.

I think you can also use the facilities at Finlake so worth looking at their website to see what they have by way of indoor pools etc, they are on the outskirts of Chudleigh.

I am thinking about booking a break there it looks great, the only negative feedback I have been given was that it is more suitable for younger children than older but, it looks fun for all ages to me.

Hope the weather is good for you.

We're off this weekend to North Cornwall and are taking our wet weather gear !

Shellseeker it is a vast site as we had a walk around it this time last year with a view to taking OH's son down one weekend.  We walked around the play area and it looks great fun so go for it.  North Cornwall is one of my favourite areas, in fact we have a week to take in September and I might book a cottage up there.

Hi

how about the steam train trip?

Our kids loved the pottery painting place that you pass on the way in to the nearest main line railway station...whats it called...totnes

they also loved becky falls which although outdoors is covered by trees and in our experience they get wet anyway...

I think the house of marbles is nearby too? or am I getting mixed up? that's got  a few things to look at...

c-mac

Aw yes the steam train is good, many years since I did it but I can picture it now.  Also if you go to Dawlish the main line runs right along the beach so you could catch the train into Exeter, for instance.

Wow, thanks everyone, that'll keep me busy for a while whilst I check out the websites.  That is if I can manage to type as we've got everything crossed that the weather bucks up a bit!

It can't be worse than last week LindseyB.  Our caravan is about 15 mins from River Dart at Chudleigh and we had rain from Tuesday evening til Sat morning almost non stop!  Almost put a motor on the caravan and chugged around Devon I can tell ya!
