I have finally persuaded my OH to try camping this summer. I normally go with friends. What campsite in the New Forest would you recommend to a newbie that won't break the bank? I'm going to take him away for a weekend to try to get him to get the bug....

I can highly recommend Hollands Wood which is a large campsite owned by the Forestry commission. We spent a week there during the May Half Term. Has 600 pitches which are spread out over a huge site, so finding a nice spot is not a problem. Good facilities, never busy which was a surprise for the size of the site. Very friendly staff and of course the delight of having the horses roaming through the campsite!

The forestry commission sites look good, but seem expensive - £52.70 for 3 nights in the summer. Is this normal for August? or is the New Forest just expensive?

£17.57 a night, wouldn't say that is overley expensive for August and that area, you can get other commercial sites up around £25 a night.
