Hi, 

Can anybody recommend a campsite to stay at in Scotland, not too far up in the Highlands as we are coming from the North East and I think the midges might be a problem for my hubby and kids?  We have always gone to the Lake District which we love, but we fancied a change this term.  Thanks

Gosh I've got the best site ever for you!  Try SEAWARD we have just come back after the weekend and what a find!

Its clean, reasonable,peaceful, sea views on ALL pitches, lovely wardens, outside pool, playarea, free showers etc, with units that have loo, shower vanity unit and basin in one room, what luxury.

Try that I'm sure you'll not be disappointed we certainly wasnt and I'm VERY fussy!

Depending where you want to stay in Scotland we stay at Lomond Woods at Balloch but i do not know if they take tents or  there is the CC&C site at Luss, which are both on Loch Lomond.

Or furthar up we also stayed at a site at Glen Coe which i cannot remember the name of but it is on the waters edge & has excellent facilities i will try to look for the name.

The midges are bad up here (Argyll/Loch Lomond area) at the moment and so I suggest you take up the Seaward suggestion.

i used to go there on holiday when i was little! I loved it! had gorgeous views! my parents friends lived in kinlochleven.

If you are not looking to travel all that far north in Scotland, plus avoid midges....then I have the following suggestions:

1. Witches Crag near Stiring. Rural location, but close to many site seeing activities and places to visit.

2.
Blair Castle, approx 30 miles north of Perth up the A9. very rural location, but on a large campsite that can become very busy. Very large central play area though.

We're just back from Tummel Valley, near Pitlochry and it was brilliant, facilities are excellent, kids play area, indoor pool and entertainment for the family>

Nice location. Just looked their web site and the (serviced) pitch prices increase to £22-26 over the summer, £2 for extras (pup tent, awning, gazebo) and £2 for a dog.

got to second the recommendation about caolasnacon.  Recently back from it and the most beautiful views of any site I have ever been on. A short drive from the magical Glencoe and the town of Fort William.  A must see site.  Fairly basic but clean, but the location is perfect for seeing a lot of Scotland!

About 1/2 a mile from Caolasnacon on the Glencoe Village side, you cross an old bridge over a stream and immediately on your right is a wonderful Wild Camping Spot. With the babbling brook (stream) running down one side and views to die for, it is one of the best wild camp spots I have found so far.

To be fair on the offical caravan parks in the area, I have only ever used this spot out of season. That is out of season for both CPs and Midges.
