I have the C&CC Big Sites book as well. We tried using our road atlas last year because it shows every campsite, but quickly gave it up as a bad idea. We're a bit fussy and you never know what kind of site you will turn up at!
I've also hung onto a guide that was given away free with The Guardian a few weeks ago, and bought Cool Camping Scotland recently. Both of these list small interesting sites that are considered worth a visit under various criteria (such as great views, interesting tents to hire, good places to visit nearby etc. etc.). Cool Camping probably isn't good value for money. Of about 30 sites it lists, I might visit 1 or 2, but it is a lovely bit of escapism on the train to work!
