Hi all

Just a quick question.  We were hoping to take out bikes to the Isle of Wight, but a few of our friends have told us that the roads are a bit steep.  We are not great cyclists just fair weather ones.  Can anyone shed some lite on the matter please as it may not be worth our while taking them with us if everwhere is too steep.

Many Thanks Kathy

From memory there are a few hilly roads on the island yes,  but theres also a fair few flat roads as well, All depends on what part of the island you wish to cycle i guess.

I would say that Ventnor would be top of the no go list LOL.

Hi, If you enjoy cycling for pleasure, I would not take the bikes there. It is quite hilly in most places although it is a very nice place to visit.

Im quite a keen cyclist

I trawled four bikes down there for 2 weeks. Only my son and I ventured off the site at Ryde. That corner of the island was very hiily and the roads very narrow.

Over to the north west corner the roads are flatter.

As leisure cyclists as you describe your self I agree with Floyd.

The money you save om petrol not taking them would be better spent on parking fees or buses.

Still a lovely island though

Enjoy

    Kathy

In one word DONT. The roads are very dangerous in the summer time because mainly the visitors and also the young bloods who all think its a race track. If you have youngsters with you as well it will worry you to death.Take the car you will see more and be safer.Do try the small lanes just west of Yarmouth .Norton.Victoria Fort.Totland Bay and then on to the Needles at Alum Bay.

Wishing you a happy and safe trip

Thanks guys for all you help.  I think I will leave them at home instead and take the bus everywhere if I can.  I will of course have my car with me but prefer not to drive while on holiday.  I will be based at The Orchards Caravan Site in Yarmouth.

Thanks again I am really looking forward to my week on the Island I have heard lots of great reports about it.

Happy Holidays Kathy
