My husband and I are thinking of walking the Grand Union Canal from Birmingham to London and back again. Can anyone recommend good places to camp along the way?

Hi Rebeccs

welcome to UKCS

Your expedition sounds a fab one.

I would suggest that you look at your map and guess where you will be stopping then look in 23 here

You wont find any better campsite book on any shelf

I do hope you let us know how you got on

PS

would it not be easier taking a boat   LOL

SOOOOOOOOOO jealous

all the best

Hi,

I have also been looking for campsites along the grand union as I have been given use of a candian canoe for this coming weekend. I live at Leighton Buzzard and the only campsite nearby which is on the grand union is the old dairy farm one at stoke Hammond. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results3.asp?search=dairy+farm&by=sitename mixed reviews and I've never stayed there but have seen it as I sometimes run past it when I go jogging. other than that you will probably be pushed to find a campsite between their and London and will either need to find B and B's or rough camp on the towpath. I am waiting to hear back from the above campsite If they have any pitches available for saturday night and if so will let you know how we get on.

I have never been canoe camping before and am looking forward to it and so is my eldest son but was hoping to find a campsite a little further afield as this one is just on our doorstep.

Hope your walk goes Ok, when are you hoping to do it? there is a running event that goes the length of the Grand Union and maybe one day I'll enter that.

Thanks for that, I'm still waiting for a map I ordered of the canal route so when I have that I'll see if there are more available. I don't know when we'll do it because it's going to take some planning. I've got a tent I've been waiting for some time to use, but it's the other things like wet weather gear that we need to be sure of.

Would we be allowed to rough camp on the towpath? I didn't think that would be allowed. We're a bit new to camping so any information and tips would be very useful.

Thanks

There is a campsite at Lovat Meadow in Newport Pagnell, I assume they accept tents. You could leave the canal at The Black Horse, Great Linford and catch a bus to Newport or leave the canal a little further south and walk from Gifford Park to the campsite.

We did camp at the dairy farm camp site last weekend and it was great for what we wanted as it's just off the towpath, the toilet and shower block has been upgraded since some of the reviews so no problems there.

I don't think you are allowed to camp on the towpath but if you pitched the tent late and were off early in the morning could get away with it, especailly if your tent looks like a fishing shelter  [;)]

have you seen this web page? http://www.jim-shead.com/waterways/Grand-Union-Main-Line.html if you scroll down to the bottom there is a table giving distances for the whole length.
