Hi,

Possibly I'm mad but we are planning a 5 week trip to Scotland in the summer stopping in Northumberland on the way up and The Lakes on the way down (my kids have never been to Scotland).

Yes I'm worried about midges (already bought some Avon SSS) and rain.

Nick

We went up to the highlands last year in August and had no problem with the midges. The only time we meet them was on a one night stay in Glencoe, and that was by a stream.

Don,t let them put you off, Scotland is fantastic other than a long drive

kirsty

Don't let the midges put you off - they can be a problem but once you've got your Avon stuff on they b**ger off!!

It's a fantastic place - Nick your trip sounds fantastic - make sure you spend plenty time in Northumberland and the Lakes.

As for rain - well you can't have everything now can you !!!

It's that beautiful up here, I emigrated from England to live here.

The west coast is more rugged but does suffer with midges at times, the east coast can look more like English countryside at times.

Go up through the highlands and the scenery changes around every bend. Paradise.

Hi,

I did a similar thing a few years ago but didn't have that much time. I'd never been to Scotland before. We went in Aug/Sept but never had a problem with midges really. Make sure you at least go through Edinburgh as it is a great city.

Scotland was amazing, as was the Lake District. Try to find sites on the edge of the lakes as you can't beat the views there.

Have fun,

Lyn

Hiya errol106

We did Scotland for the first time ever this year (just 4 weeks ago - and still my heart is there!!!!).

We live in Cornwall so travelled up using various stop offs.  1 night in Tewkesbury, Glos, followed by 2 nights in the lovely Lake District.  We only had 5 nights in Scotland (Stirling) but managed to get a real feel for the area (we concentrated on Loch Lomond and the Trossachs which were fabulous, even in the rain!!!).  We travelled back down via Berwick-Upon-Tweed, York and the Cotswolds and had the time of our lives.  We would recommend it to one and all.  All the sites we stayed on were pre-booked Caravan Club sites and were all brilliant.  I've done reviews for each site but as yet they've not been published??????

Go for it, you certainly won't regret it - we didn't!!!

We have been up there for the last four years and love the place, not camped yet but doing so this year. We are going late September early October. When we have been before we have stayed in Lanarkshire on the way up and are going to do the same with the van both ways.  We love the Islands particularly Isle of Mull.  Never had midge problems whatever time of year we have been.  I think that is due to the rain though.

Scotland is a great place for a holiday.

Valerie

Hi Kev, the highlands are magnificent and well worth the distance, plenty of campsites around Aviemore area although we have not used them, When up that way we stay at Auchnahillan which excellently situated for Inverness and allows for day trips to many areas both north and south of the area. Up to John'O'Groats, small camp site facing Orkney which can be a bit wind swept but well worth the experience, Passenger ferry across to Orkney for a day trip (say high to my wee bro who lives up there! ) The Castle Mey is now open to the public, Queen Mothers lovely home! And a whole load more between the borders and the top that your time will fly past!
For great information visit Undiscovered Scotland, it is full of information on where to go and what to see!
Alba West have some of the best advice on the Midges, along with some humour on the subject! Pesky things get everywhere - sit next to another non Scottish person who hasn't got any 'protection' and they will feast there first!

I am sure your wife will love Scotland and that you will add it to the calander and keep on returning year after year.

If we are home and you are passing J4 of the M8 send me an e-mail and let us know, cuppa tea and a sandwich along with meeting each other is always a welcome thing!
