I'm no good at map reading and can't remember what the roads are like so feel free to dis-regard this but I used to live in the area and seem to remember that if you wanted to avoid Sutton Bank a good way is to head for Coxwold and then Ampleforth. From there you can re-join the A170 at Helmsley and its straight through to Scarborough. There are signs around Sutton Bank showing alternative routes. Look out for the White Horse on the hillside at Kilburn (not a pub but a chalk horse on the hillside!!)
When you get somewhere near sutton bank they give you an alternative route to follow with caravans (all sign posted) as you are not allowed up sutton bank wether you want to chance it or not.
We went to jacobs mount last year i hope you like it busy and noisy.

I think we got off quite lightly this time, it seems to be South Yorkshire that got the drenching. I saw pictures on the telly of a caravan floating in someone's garden, my heart goes out to them!
why not go to scarborough down the A19 to just south of teeside then take the road to whitby then the coast road to scarborough thats the way i go all the time from gateshead been a few times with and without the caravan last time with the caravan think it took me 2 hours to the c&cc site

Thanks for everyones reply, I will take Bryans advice and Go to A19 A171 to Whitby route. this is the way the sat nav gave as the quickest route. I just wasn't sure about the A19. Always best to get advice especially when you have never traveled these routes.
Im a wagon driver an i can tell u that Sutton Bank is the steepest hill i have ever come across, its that bad u have to stay in low gear all the way up otherwise when u change gear u will just stop and if u dont change up quick enough u will roll back,
