AA route planner says that you leave the M6 at J40 and take the A66, so you could stay somewhere in the North Lake District, or near Appleby. There is a nice camp site right by Ullswater at Pooley Bridge, or at least there used to be.

AA route planner sez take A66 but we always go from Notts along A50 to join M6 at Stoke then head north from there - much easier. The A66 goes through nicer countryside but it's much slower. Mrs Fudge is from Notts and we live in Central Scotland so we do the journey a lot.
find a site in Dumfries & Galloway - it's about your half-way mark and the countryside is gorgeous.

Many thanks - we are looking at Brandedleys but I bet they will be booked up.  We go to Fort William a lot but this will be the first time camping - not looking forward to the midges but love the scenery.

We stayed here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3201 at Carlisle for a couple of nights on the way to the Stranraer ferry - it was a nice enough diversion if you're into castles and walls and stuff.

The Camping and Caravaning Club site at Moffat gets good reviews.Its 5 minutes from the motorway handy for Cumbria,South-West Scotland and you can visit Edin burgh in just over an hour.I've not stayed there as its pretty  close to home.

  There is a site at tebay services on the m6, and a very good site at Gretna Green 2 mins of motorway, called the Braids caravan site..ellroy.
