My hubby and I are planning our very 1st camping trip in 2 weeks time and we are going to go to Side Farm in Patterdale, Penrith.  We'll be taking our bikes and walking boots, our shiny new tent etc!

Any advice from anyone who's been to that area?

I hope it's not full and we get turned away as it is one where you cannot book in advance.

People probably did not look at the thread because it said Penrith rather than Ullswater or Patterdale.  If you post again using "Ullswater" as the topic name you are sure to get some helpful replies.

I have not camped on that particular site but quite often use the Quiet Site at Ullswater.  Patterdale is very low so I would check whether the site is susceptible to becoming waterlogged or flooded.

Hi LuaLua, we stayed at Park Foot, Pooley Bridge, which is at the opposite end of Ullswater. I would recommend a visit to Pooley Bridge. It's a lovely little village with a couple of nice pubs, cafe/tea-rooms and craft and gift shops. There's also two outdoors type shops selling all sorts of camping gear,ie tents, sleeping bags, clothing and walking boots, sailing equipment etc. We where there last August BH and it was really busy and everywhere we went was packed (pubs, shops etc) but we will defo be returning there in the near future! We drove down to Glenriding for a day which is not far from Patterdale and this was also a nice little place. I would also recommend a trip on the Ullswater Steamers. The scenery is fantastic, as it is everywhere in the Lake District!

We stayed at Parkfoot last year as well. If you can`t get on the site you want, you will probably be able to get onto Park Foot.

I agree with Psyklon, Pooley Bridge is a nice little village and Penrith is worth a walk round. There is also a big indoor/outdoor market there at weekends. Is there anything in particular you wanted to know about the area Lua?

Hi

know the area very well, have friends in kirkoswald just above Penrith, best thing is to call in to the Tourist info at Penrith, in the town centre near the small cinema, pick up a parking zone disc for free while you are there as you will need it for the town centres in the area,

try the cycling network up round the Eden valley, lot quieter area between lakes and pennines but beautiful,

Jane

Thanks for all your comments.

It's a shame it's raining so much!!  Wouldn't like to stay at a waterlogged site

I'm looking at other sites in the area to stay at, there is one that seems nice called Cove Caravan & Camping Park.  Side Farm might be a bit too basic for our first trip.

I'll certainly bear in mind your comments about how nice Pooley Bridge & Penrith are.

I use the Quiet Site, just a little way up the road past the Cove site.  As the name suggests it is quiet, and has a small friendly bar with log fire in the converted barn and a childrens play area with table tennis etc.  The bar does not stay open late so there is not usually any noise. Being on the hillside the site drains well, and pitches are relatively flat.
