I've never been but it was a site I thought I would like to try...until I read about the horses. I used to go to the New Forest regularly some years ago for day trips and I have some experience of New Forest Ponies being a bit of a nuisance, and they can get quite obstinate and aggressive at times, so the thought of camping among them isn't really my idea of a peaceful, worry free holiday - lol.

We went to ashurst for nearly every trip until they put their prices up. The horses are only a problem if you leave food out, that includes food you are about to cook. as long as you leave food in secure plastic boxes in your tent you won't have a problem. To be honest the squirels are more of a pest! they do get in your tent and will eat through cardboard boxes, hence why we use plastic.

The horse don't trample on the tents although we once had a donkey catch his hoof on our guy line and pull it up.

It really is a nice peacful site, pity about the new prices this year.

Hi Guys, i know nothing of camping but KNOW horses!!! Trust me - they WILL NOT trample you down or your tents. Horses are herd animals with thier main instint to flee - not to trample stuff!!! The horses there are wild too - so the instinct to flee will be even more than in a domesticated horse. If they do come near just stay calm and don't flap - that will send them running all over the place.

I agree with Liz,the ponies will not trample your tents!

They may have been fed tit bits from campers and be inquisitive and look for food but if you just calmly send them away they will go,as Liz points out they flee so the worst thing you can do is wave your arms around and scare them as they will be off at speed!

Rather face ponies in a field than cows any day!

We are also thinking of booking at ashurst it looks beautiful! the only thing that put me off slightly is no hook up! but i think the ponies should be fine have had a fair bit of experience of new forest ponies and as long as you dont encourage them feed them etc they should not be too much of a problem they just like to try their luck! but be warned if you feed them  once you will regret it! They certainly wont charge up to you whilst you are cooking but if you leave any food on the table dont be surprised if its gone when you get back!

Hi.  We've stayed at Roundhill in the New Forest and have never had a problem with the horses.  Yes they are nosey but they can be shooed away easily.  I do tell my girls to keep their distance from them though.  Friends did have two horse visit their tent last year but no trampling and they moved away with no problem.

Infact we were so impressed their tent was big enough to fit two ponies inside and turn them round to come out again that we bought one the same!

We stayed at Roundhill and the horses were not a problem.

There are also donkeys and cows. One afternoon OH went in the campervan for a nap and he woke up to a cow peering in to the van - head right in but no problem it just went off as OH got up.

Lovely sites.
