Unfortunately Essex really does suffer from the lack of a decent touring site, in general terms. That is a real pain as I live less than an hour from Clacton and if there was one I would use it for weekends.
Valley Farm doesn't really cater for the tourer its more for the static owners and doesn't rate that highly in my book personally. If you want to try a smaller site there is Homestead at Weeley which appears quite nice or Grange Farm at Thorpe Le Soken which is a working farm very basic but ideal for a base to get around. It is basic though!!
Good eats, two pubs in Thorpe Le Soken The Crown and The Bell both are very good. Clacton has very little to offer though The Dive does normally serve a reasonable portion of Chish and Fips. The Robin Hood near Little Clacton isn't bad and Frinton has a couple of decent eateries though I cannot remember the names of them.
Where to go - Frinton for the beach but nothing else though it is a short walk into Walton for the Pier and amusements. Clacton for a seafront walk though little else as it suffers greatly from London overspill especially in the summer. Manningtree has a nice riverside walk and Jimmys Farm is close by. Harwich and Dovercourt is OK if you are a boatspotter. Colchester for shopping. West Mersea is Ok for a day beach isn't anything to write home about though it is great for windsurfing.
Unfortunately Essex in general offers little I'm afraid hence we always go west !! Just wish we lived there.
