Past 3 years we have travelled down on the Friday, leaving SW Wales at about 8am and have had a straight run through to Newquay.  Traffic on M5 Avonmouth - Taunton very heavy but moving freely.

Previously gone on Friday Night with over night at Exeter, but foun dloads of others do that as well and when you hit the raod on Saturday morning to head off into Cornwall the A30 is an absolute nightmare as everyone is hitting it at the same time!

From personal experience I have found the M5 southbound is a total nightmare from first thing in the morning on a holiday Saturday until well into the afternoon.  I say this from living in the area and occasionally going up to Cribbs Causeway using the Taunton to Bristol M5 section and seeing the car park that is the southbound carriageway.  I always return through central Bristol onto the A37 to avoid having to come back down that way.

We are going to South Breazle near Okehampton on Saturday.  We were planning to leave at around 6 a.m. from South Cheshire (M6, J16).

Now I've read this thread I'm a bit concerned that it's going to be a nightmare and take forever.

At a push we could go friday instead; would that be much better fo you think?

I'll remind him of this laid back statement when we are stationary on the M5 and he has a face like thunder
