Gonna be trying out our new tent this weekend for one night at a local campsite (Royal Bordeaux 6) and then we're off to Alton Towers for one night in their hotel and waterpark themepark next Thursday/Friday.

We figured as it is a long journey for us (from South Wales) that we'd also take the tent and camp in the surrounding area, preferably so we can visit the Peak District, if we can get booked in that is for the Friday and possibly Saturday night next weekend.

Hence, can anyone recommend any decent campsites that may not be too fully booked around the Derbyshire area? Preferably near the edge of the peak district (Bakewell area etc.). There's so much choice in the ukcampsite that I wouldn't know where to start!

we were at highfields in ashbourne last weekend and thought it was fantastic , quiet but with a large play area outdoors for the kids, it is also 1 of only 2 so far in derbyshire we have found with an indoor pool .

Callow top is another good one with it's own pub and a games room etc, we have not actually stayed here yet but have had a good look around the site.

My parents went to Longnor Wood near Buxton recently and really rated it - great views, nicely landscaped and set out. think you will be able to find it on the search here.

I've stayed at Callow Top at Ashbourne. (Twice)

It's within easy walking distance of Ashbourne, has its own pub on site and is right next to the Tissington Trail, which is a dissused railway line converted to a cycle/walkway. Tends to be really busy at weekends with the usual kids bike racing around the site. If you are going to stay for a week and have pre-booked, and are arriving either Saturday or Sunday, ring and insist on a pitch near-ish to the reception or you may end up pitched at the far end of the site with no neighbours and nothing to look at but empty pitches. and they sometimes close the far toilet/shower block during the week when the site is quieter.

The pub does good food and Ales.

Depends wht your idea of a good camp site is. there is Rivendale which has it's own pub and doggy walking area, nearby Tissington trail. Have a look on the reviews for the different sites it will tell you what there is on them and nearby.

Hi

Can recommend Greenhills on the edge of Bakewell very near Ashford in the Water and Monsal Head.  Can also recommend Peak Gateway at Ashbourne.

Greenhills would have been our first choice but was fully booked, so we've decided on Callow Top and will be taking our kit after we visit Alton Towers on the Friday (hope we're not too tired to be able to put up the tent!). Staying for 2 nights, Fri and Sat so hope its good - more importantly, hope the weather stays reasonable!!!
