I've just recently returned from a camping trip in Germany.

On arrival and erecting our tent, the Site owner connected my hook-up to the supply point. When he did this he read the electric meter next to my plug and made a note of it. he said that there would be a €0.50 connection charge which I pay when I leave.

At the end of our weeks holiday, I went to settle my bill and I was a little apprehensive of what it would cost.

Imagine my surprise when I was presented with the bill.

One weeks electric (on 24hrs for coolbox and cooking) including connection fee,

€4.90.

Both you and I know how much we pay here in the UK, £2 sometimes £3 on top of your pitch fee, per DAY.

Why the massive difference????

John H

cause it's on a meter and that's the actual cost of the electricity you  used rather than the price uk campsites charge.  Sounds a good idea to me.

I know what you mean, we pay for hook up and sometimes it's just my hairdryer in the morning and re-charge the light , maybe mobile phones.I do think i pay over the odds for what we use but thats my choice , i could be using a lot more than i pay for, maybe i will one day when i get the T.v. and all the other mod cons. then i'll probably be paying for less than i've used , but hey ho thats the way it goes

Here you pay for the facility to have electricty not for the electricty itself. Campsites are not allowed to "charge over the odds" for what you actually consume and this makes it uneconomic to put in the posts atc that allow us to have EHU. Hence the flat hook-up fee.

We sometimes pay for EHU and decide to pitch on an area without it.I can do without the luxuries of electricity for a few days.
i never ask for a refund, booking the EHU pitch just means we have the choice of pitches

We experienced the metered hook up in Germany when we stayed there a few years ago. It is a honest and straight forward way of paying for what you use, and that is the German way of doing things. On the particular site we stayed at it was coin operated, so you paid as you used, so simple, so fair, thats why the Germans are so renown for their efficient way they do ,and make things. We are all part of the E.U so why can they do it and yet over here we are told its not possible because of regulations ?  Its just another feature of rip off Britain.   kiev

The main problem with bringing into UK is the initial cost, especially for those park that already have hookup points.  If its a new park or development area then why not do it from the beginning.  However, on another point, what about people who have a great holiday but at the end of it the meter is read but they dont have the money left to pay the bill?

You can just imagine a Saturday morning at any of the big 'commercial' sites here in the U.K.... Queue's of people waiting to have their meter read, so they can pay their electricity bill, before heading home... A recipe for 'bedlam' I reckon!...

Always look for a hook up pitch.

Running

  • Fridge.
  • Cool Box
  • Water heater
  • Heating System
  • Heather in awning
  • TV
  • DVD/Digibox
  • Recharge Battery
  • Charge mobiles
  • Mrs Scarletsfan's hair dryer and straighteners
  • Lighting

I reckon I get my money's worth (and looking at the above list, my own little hole in the ozone layer  )

Look for a site with free hookup. They do exist, you know. I'm going to one in a few weeks!

No such thing, it might be included in the pitch rate, but will I doubt it will be free.

Ah, well, you got me there. Serves me right! Still, I did shop around for the campsite rates, and they are less than the other main campsites (not by much, but less) in the area (it's on the IOW). So I regard the free hookup as a benefit as opposed to a cost.

I also think its value for money at £2 to £3 a night.

We have Halogen heater on when needed.

Straighteners and mobiles.

Kettle and toaster.

Small desk lamp and lantern.

mini fridge.

my son has his portable dvd player on at night.
