Hi all

We are planning to go to Ilfracombe and then Symonds Yat next weekend for a 2 week camping trip.  With two small children in tow we are having doubts about whether to go or not.  Has anyone been down to these areas recently?

We were so looking forweard to it as we were meant to go to Devon alst August and our car broke down and we had to abandon...is someone trying to tell me something?!

Cheers for any info.

I am due to go to Woolacombe on Sunday in the Motorhome and the site will not allocate me a hard standing until I arrive if there is one available! Tried telling them my Motorhome will not be comfortable on muddy ground but they say first come first served but its a bloody long drive from Leeds to Devon to find there is not a suitable pitch!

It's a difficult one isn't it?

I can see it from both sides - from the business side, for some smaller sites (like one my friends own) freak weather either scorching or as it is now, can either make or break them. Many are desperately trying to hold on to as much income as they possibly can - for the small sites, they need it to see them through the winter months. The big boys (like Haven) should be able to absorb some of the losses however.

From a customer point of view, who wants to camp in torrential rain on a pitch that you can't access without wellies and possibly a dinghy too?

I make a point of only booking sites which accept a deposit. I don't pay in advance (except at Dolbryn where I know the owners and like to help them out where possible) so that should the unexpected occur, I would only lose my deposit.

I do sympathize with both parties - this awful weather is affecting us all in some way or other.

Why is it difficult?

Site cancels=money back

You cancel=lose deposit/payment

Why do people always expect others to take responsibilty for their actions?

And where exactly does it say the site is under water??

Common sense would prevail, something obviously lacking here

i canceled last week end and lost my deposit i expected this. but felt the forcast was so bad it just didnt seem worth sitting in the rain for 10 days waiting for an odd day to go out. also we have had so much rain the ground is too wet to do much as in walking or even visiting places.
we have just booked a 3 day trip to majorca and we have never flown or been with out the caravan before. i am terrified and i think my husband is as well so i dont think we are going to enjoy it that is if we even go. i wish it was tomorrow so i dont have to think about it.

This was a complaint on one of these threads just recently, that

caravans could never get a hard-standing because they keep them

for the motorhomes.  Perhaps they noted that caravan people

wasn't happy about having to pitch on sodden grass all the time

I really am not bothered about loosing my deposit, what I am bothered about is shlepping down the motorway to find out the site is a mud bath! Just wish they would tell me that!

I suppose if they do then they will have to refund my deposit.

All I ask is for an honest account of the state of the pitches because I am not pitching in mud!

This is when you find out which sites are fair-weather excellent sites.  Serenity (near Whitby, highly recommended) refused to take a deposit from us in the first place, saying it wasn't fair on us when it was so likely we wouldn't be able to pitch.  So we like them even more now!

I used to be terrified to fly but a very good friend who flies all over the world cured me when he told me to say to myself when we parked the car at the airport "Well that's the most dangerous part of my journey over" And it is true, an elevator is the only safer form of transport!   We are now off to New Zealand for 3 months in December to visit our son and I would'nt fly for over 20 years.    I also used to listen to music on my headphones and close my eyes and imagine I was on a bus.

As mentioned in the post earlier, Why not ask for a credit note? The park is not providing the service so you should be refunded but if under water it's not their fault, a credit note would mean you dont lose your money and they still keep the customers?
