Hi, this Friday we were going down to Dorset to Woodlands Park campsite until they rang this morning to say that they have had to close due to a landslide!

It is our first proper camping trip, so not to be beaten we have got the last pitch at Treveague Farm near St Austall. There are a few reviews, all positive, on here but I wondered if anyone could fill in the blanks for us.

What is the terrain like around this site near to Gorran Haven? Flat, hilly, very hilly? we are interested to see if it is worth taking the bikes with us? Is the short walk that is mentioned into Gorran Haven down lanes, major road or footpath?

If anyone has any info for our hastily re-arranged holiday I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

Chris,

Treveague is a great campsite and we have been coming down here for the last 5 years.

As for the terrain, It's Cornwall so it's pretty hilly I'm afraid. The campsite is just off the Dodman so it's downhill to almost everywhere (and uphill back to the campsite). On saying that you're not that far from the Camel Trail which starts north of Bodmin and finishes in Padstow.

On the plus side, there are two fantastic and relatively quiet beaches nearby (Hemick and Vault). Both allow dogs and are only a mile or so from the campsite. Further afield is Caerhays and Nare Head but these tend to be a lot busier.

Gorran Haven is a nice village and is either a short half-mile walk down a footpath or a short drive. There's a great shop called Cakebreads which sells all manner of things and three nearby pubs all within about a 3 mile radius of the site.

The main reason we like the site is that the Dodman seems to miss out on the really bad weather that can affect other parts of the coast. Myra and Steven are also extremely friendly and helpful site owners.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I've just looked up the Dodman and got some interesting stuff off the net about walks.

In a way I'm glad the orginal campsite in Dorset cancelled on us as I'm more excited about going to Cornwall. Fingers crossed for weather that isn't as extreme as it has been.

Chris,

We've been here 9 days and have only had two days that were a washout.

I am told that the Fish and Chips that are served at the Barley Sheaf (Gorran High Lanes) is worth a go on Fridays.

It may be hard work in terms of cycling but it is fantastic walking country.

Chris,

There is a cycle track nearby from Pentewan to St Austell, which isn't too long if you have young children.  You can continue along the route through St Austell and then on an off road route to Eden, the clay museum and on to  Bugle in the heart of clay country.  You do get a discount at Eden if you arrive by cycle.

Great tip on the Eden discount. Thanks.
