Just got back from another weekend in The Lakes. my Grandad now 94 and still loving the lakes was up there with us on Sunday, we had a trip down to Glenridding and a coffe at the steamer launch. Directly opposite the launch on the other side of the lake was a small campsite, as Grandad was tiring fast we returned him to our reletives in whitehaven and didnt get a chance to get a closer look at this site.

Does anyone know the name of this site or reccognise it from my description.

thanks

tom

It sounds like Side Farm, Patterdale. The farm is to the south of the lake but the campsite appears to be on the lakeside opposite Glenridding, looking at the O.S. map.

The campsite on the far (eastern) side of the lake to the village is Side Farm.

Gillside Farm is up behind the village (west), about half a mile up the valley.

I prefer Gillside, coz it's a shorter walk to the pub :-)

(Lordy, just worked it out: I first camped at Gillside over 37 years ago! Nurse! The medication!)

Good Morning tomcauser

You've brought some great memories flooding back to me this morning by just mentioning Glenridding!  We stayed there 3 years ago in a lovely cottage alongside the beck (didn't have our motorhome then!).  We walked to Patterdale and used the pub there a few times too!

You've now inspired me to check out those sites and get back up there sometime.

Thanks for making a very dull, wet morning in Cornwall sunny in my mind!!!!

Do you mean Kirkstone Pass?  If so, yeah we've done it in a car.  We stayed at Bowness back in May and were gonna attempt it in our motorhome but were advised not to by the wardens!  Isn't the little, tiny, road off Kirkstone Pass called 'The Struggle'??????  Obviously for a reason?!

I worked as a field engineer and sometimes had to drive to Ambleside to do repairs there. I once drove the Kirkstone Pass way as one of the other engineers suggested that i would save time !!!

Well, that was almost a year ago and my bum still hasn't unclenched !!!!!

tomcauser, i checked this site out (farm side, patterdale).  Its got quite a long single track road from the 'main' road.  I had to reverse about 3 times to give way to other passing vehicles.  I seam to remember i had 3 kids in the back giving me a hard time so my view is probably a bit coloured!  Stressed, i finally got to the 'farm house and had another stress trying to park long enough to get some details.  i dont remember much after that.  I know i didnt drive as far as the campsite as it looked about the same singletrack distance that i had already done.  By then i think i had decided that Gillside would do me, thank you!

However, i know what you mean, it did look very inviting from the launch!!  Perhaps i'll give it another look some time (without the kids!)

Maybe not as unlucky as many, but the weather has been disgusting. Its the wettest summer that i can remember in 25 years living in the Lakes.
