Now the weather has improved, me and the kids (3 an 5) would like to go away for a couple of days midweek and we were wondering if anyone could recommend anywhere not too far from SE London (max 2+ hours drive). What we like is 'back to basics' camping, with camp fires an added bonus and campsites that will take our very well mannered dog without him having to be on a lead all day. A must is to be near water that is at the very least paddle-able in, so sea, rivers, lakes or streams nearby. No noisy sites with club rooms, tellies etc, we don't mind roughing it as long as it is in peace and quiet.
All suggestions welcome!

How about Eastbourne area, is that do-able down the A22?
We just had a weekend at Freshfields Farm near Pevensey Bay. Haven't had a chance to put a review up yet but we had a lovely time, me, OH & 10yr old daughter. We live in Brighton & wanted somewhere OH could get to on public transport after work Friday as me & daughter were going mid-afternoon to pitch tent. It was ideal. We found a public footpath that runs from near the castle right across the fields (and railway track!) down to the beach, quite a walk but a pretty one at that. The site itself has a lake and farm animals etc. Facilities were adequate. We paid an extra fiver to stay all day Sunday as didn't want to leave at mid-day.
